Some interesting new features coming to the 18 rogue. Most notably, Apple car play and Android auto. Would be awesome if they let us with the 17 premium package upgrade

Yeah I read about that. They could have also implemented Android Auto into the 14-16 MYs (Model Years) too. However, Nissan initially offered CarPlay (only found in the Maxima), which kinda sucks for us Android users; but thank god the automotive gods answered back with Android auto for Nissan. And about that autonomous technology, I prefer not to have it, as it takes away the point of driving and owning a car in the first place. As that was one of the reasons that I got the SL without the premium package. And, what happened to the good old Craftsmanship over technology?

I wonder if there will be a way to upgrade my 2017 with premium package via software update to Android auto?

Will Nissan do the same thing for the 14-16 Models, as it is also the same HU as the 17?

I drive a lot, I love to drive. Why are auto designers such killjoys? First the automatic transmission in its various forms now autonomous driving. As datechboss101 said why even own a car. I always tell my kids if you can drive your car with one foot and one hand you’re missing half the fun of driving. Yes all 3 of my girls drive a manual stick shift car, which are becoming increasingly difficult to find.

Blame the dang world governments and Toyota and non-car people for making automobiles to become a boring piece of appliance.

Its not hard to find one... There are plenty of cars that have manual trannies that are still being made (Accord, Civic, HRV, etc., just to name a few). And even though I might have finally gotten used to this CVT, I do plan on doing a transmission swap, presumably to a Honda 6-speed manual, as I have no clue on what other Nissan models other than the Z and GTR, that are manual. May end up getting a new Honda with a manual once I am done with college.

Don't forget to blame car buyers as well. The masses don't want a manual, the masses don't want to be inconvenienced in traffic and would prefer a car that can stop and go so they don't have to, the masses want better fuel economy, etc.

I agree people just want an appliance to get from point A to point B. However if you go into a dealership to buy a new car and ask “does this model come in a manual?” Even if it does you’ll be told “no one wants a manual anymore”. We’ve been trained to not even ask anymore. As far as fuel economy goes even with the changes and advances in automatics a manual will still get 5-10 mpg better in the same vehicle. Not to mention the automatics are failure prone, CVT anyone, and the manuals tend to be rock solid lasting 2-300k miles, needing only a clutch replacement.

Is there any way to find out if we can update the software? But I need to call customer service? Dealership is never any help.

^^okay I called and I got a knowledgeable rep. They said the head unit is different on the 2018 so it wouldn't be as simple as a software update, at least for now.

I also contacted Nissan USA, as the 14-16 M.Y. shares the same HU as the 17-18 M.Y., however, Nissan said that the pre-faced 2nd Gen Rogues doesn't get the Android Auto compatabilities at all.

I guess we won't get those long promised apps for Nissan Connect either?!?

Other than a few differences, I'd be shocked if the head unit in the 18 is different from the 17. The head units in the 17 are still "updatable", so nissan shouldn't have an issue adding car play/auto. I'd encourage people to keep calling and asking about it though, let them know we want it

As long if we keep on contacting Nissan Motor Co., then maybe we should be able to get the update for Android Auto and those horrible Nissan Connect apps (which I still don't understand their use at all).

I would love to see any modern vehicle actually get 5-10mpg better with a manual but pretty sure this is not the case anymore. Automatics and CVTs have become so much more efficient that they usually get better rated fuel economy than their manual counterparts. Back in the day, automatics were inefficient and also performed poorly which is why manuals were favored but this is not the case anymore.

Automatics and CVT ‘s have gotten better I agree, as far as mileage, but definitely not in reliability. Let me give an example of mileage difference. My daily driver is an 05 VW Golf diesel with a 5 spd manual transmission. This same car with the automatic installed will get in the upper 30’s to mid 40’s in mileage and the transmission is failure prone. I’m approaching 300k on mine with the original transmission (2nd) clutch) and I get 52-55 mpg.

My daughter has a 2015 Hyundai Veloster 6 spd manual she regularly gets 30-33 sometimes even better. The 6spd auto version is in the 26-29 range, closer yes but still not up to par. Look at the fully automatic “Smart” car rated at 36-38. That’s laughable when I first saw one of those I thought what a great idea, an easy to park commuter car that must get over 80mpg. Nope not even close.

Now there have been some improvements especially since 05 but the bottom line I think is people have been trained to drive autos.

Or people became lazy and doesn't want to have a manual. I do agree that autos and cvts have their own problems and can bring amazing MPG numbers nowadays... just look at the 98-02 Honda Accord V6 models w/ auto or the 1st gen Rogues, or any automatic vehicle for the failures.

I just posted some differences between the Rogue and X-trail in this thread:

Looks like us North American versions doesn't get these goodies.
