Tore down the "new" motor today, only to find some pretty serious issues.

Cyl #2 bearings are BADLY burnt. Take a look at this:

The crank journal is scored as well:

I dont know if it is even fixable. The scoring is pretty bad, and the journal may even be out of round considering the damage. I'll have to bring the stuff by my machinist to have him check it out, but jeez, even if it is fixable and I can have the crank turned and larger bearings installed... I dont know if this is a good start for a planned high performance engine.

I'm already on the lookout for a new crank, but what do you guys think?

I wouldn't run the risk, I'd find a new one personally.

I dunno man, I read your other post about that "new" engine and I wouldn't put the time into it. I saw what happened to your last motor, and seemed like you invested a lot of time and money into it. And it's cool that you are rebuilding a new one, but why cheap out on an engine in crappy conidtion? I would pay the extra money to have a good conidtion KA to start with. This KA doesn't seem worth the time IMO.

Because you seem to miss the point that everything in the motor, except cracks/holes, can be fixed. Crank girdle can be bored out and oversized bearings used, cylinderwalls can be bored, block decked. Once he gets a straight crank and a competant machinist on the block, it'll be better than any other ratty thing he could find. -Jeff

Fizzel, I have two spare cranks. Just come down and pick one up. Pick up the whole damn block if you need it (SOHC is a little different but the girdle is the same). Then we can drink beers and cry about how KAs are never as simple as they seem.

Hey fiz... as long as you don't go over 0.020" overbore you should be ok on the crank. More than that I would not do it on a high performance engine... although the FSM says up to 0.040" is ok.
