So I finally get home from visiting family, a moment I've been looking forward to all week- Why? Because I ordered my intake on Monday and they said it would be in Wednesday but I wasn't home til today- and I get in my car and drive over to my local performance shop that I bought it from. Guess what? They're closed all freaking weekend! I was going to get my brother and a few of his more knowledgable friends to help me install (first mod), but NOOO... they're going back to college. So I'm going Monday directly after school to pick it up, and I now have 2 options: 1. Install the thing myself and feel the extra 5 whp next weekend, or 2. wait 3 freaking weeks and have some help. What do you guys think? I'm so pissed they weren't open today... the BUSIEST shopping day of the year... I bought NFS: Underground to lessen the pain... good game by the way... Anyway, thoughts, opinions, rants, stories of your own?

I would install it next week when you get it. It shouldnt be too hard and you will get the self satisfaction of doing the mod yourself. Let us know if you have any problems.

Of course, but I can't afford to put it in an undriveable condition during the week (school) so I'll wait til the weekend and take a look... having that box sitting in my garage would kill me... hmmm...

I wouldn't know from experience, but an intake shouldn't be too hard to install. Take off the old one, put the new one on. Half hour job you can definitely do on Monday.

I know it's not hard, I just want to be really sure, being my first mod.

The intakes on the QR motor look pretty straight forward. Not sure about the 2001 Sentra though. I would wait till the weekend to install it. That way you are not in a time crunch.

After this, I'll still have a good $500+ in the bank, can anyone think of any other cheap, simple mods (short shifter probably going to be a Christmas gift)? I think exhaust is going to be too expensive, and I'd really like to keep the cost down to 300$ or so, so that I have cash for going out and stuff. Anyone?

Whats up man, FYI for everyone else he's workin with the venerable SR20DE.

For $300 bucks I'd look to save up for an exhaust, or perhaps look towards a suspension mod like lowering springs and some strut bars.

I was thinking maybe a bar of some kind, but I can't find one. My car came with a front upper tie bar. I want to do full coilovers, so I'll wait on suspension.

I think being cautious is not only rare, but a good thing at my age. I haven't done anything other than hold flashlights for people a few times and rotate tires around a car, and while I know I could get it done, it will probably take longer than it should (lack of experience and paranoia would slow me down). My dad was kinda surprised by the part of the instructions that says "disconnect negative battery terminal," well, not really, the "remove front bumper" part got him though. Which reminds me you all need an update:

Yesterday I was getting a friend's birthday gift and on the way I stopped by the import shop again. This time, I caught one of the guys and he was going inside anyway, so he handed me the intake. Turns out, AEM is backed up until January, so he ordered an Injen instead, and from what I've seen there's no real tradeoff (anyone know?) so... Anyway, now I have the intake sitting in my basement, begging to be installed. I'm thinking I may get a few of my more technical-minded friends over next weekend to help me out. I figure with 3+ "gifted" people working together, it shouldn't take long at all, and it will probably be right.

Anyway, yeah, I'm probably installing it next weekend to be on the safe side, so that if it doesn't work or takes way longer than I thought, I can get up and do it the Saturday or Sunday morning (depending on when I start).

You should be able to install an intake yourself. Pretty mucha nyone can. It's easier than what you think and there's really nothing you can mess up.

Unplugging the negative terminal on the battery is something that all instructions for mods suggest you do. We do it all the time and wait a few minutes to make sure all the juice is out of the electrical system. I have heard a few Cold Air Intake installations where you have to take off the bumper. Sometimes you can take one of the front wheels off and the wheel well liner to access the area that you need in order to install the CAI.

I'm not as worried about messing up as taking too long. It really looks like a straightforward install after the bumper/resonator removal part. I'm just a bit jittery about getting around the engine for the first time I guess, thanks guys!

edit: Hats off againt to Nissan for giving me TONS of room around the engine bay to work in! I plan on taking lots of pictures and making a step-by-step intake install for morons FAQ.

its remove and install. its not like your trying to do a timing belt when you dont know a camshaft from a clutch disk.

You can't tell me there's people who couldn't distinguish a camshaft from a clutch disk? Disk... well it would look like a disk... and camshaft, probably long and narrow... (I know what they look like, but that's the presumed inference of those who don't... I hope).

all you have to worry about is plugging in the mass airflow and getting it tight on the throttle body right? maybe a vacuum hose or random sensor, should be easy! have fun and remember, if your not greasy, you must have a car without a front seal leak:D
