We are building a SR20 for a friend and i know with the arp main studs they strongly suggest alighn honing, but that is what i know from the v8s ive assembled. we bought a set of the main studs for his sr and i want to know if this same story holds true with those also. ive built assembled some SRs before but have never done a set of main studs one one. Im going to check the bore alighnment today and if it looks good i was wondering if you can get away without honing it. if it needs to be honed not a big deal my school has a machineshop so we can take it in and do it no problem, but he has crushed his new main bearings already and wants to cut down on build cost if possible. either way its no big deal.

if possible i was wondering if some of you guys can let me know what you did or some of your builds, or give me some advice on the situation.thanx-

ive never had to do that. be sure to check clearance on intake side though. the upper pan normally wont clear the rear 2 main studs, and have to be cut. unless arp has fixed the problem.

Yeah you are supposed to because it will distort the mains a little because of the added clamping load.

It's not so much as more clamping force, but a stronger bolt. Im pretty sure you trq them down to the stock specs, if not maybe 5-10lbs more... I really don't think it matters all that much to be honest. But if you want to spend the dough to get it line honed, have at it.

They torque down higher and have a higher thread count so there ends up with a much higher force that CAN distort the bore. I'm not going to say that ever time that I have used them I had the bore redone, but you are supposed to.

Unfortunately they didn't fixed the problem. I just installed them yesterday and the rear 2, intake side, are still to long. No big deal to fix, but not the quality I expect from ARP. The torque spec from ARP (80ft. or 108Nm over here in europe) for the mains is for my opinion to much. I torqued them down with a normal sequence to 80Nm (about 60ft).

Yep, do a search or scroll through the SR forums for my oil pan mod for the ARP mainstud clearance. I just made it last week.
