I just purchased a set of ARP head studs part number 102-4701 and a cometic head gasket part number C4283-040. I am a little concern about the studs. ARP says on a little card to torgue them in three steps to 105 ft lbs and i called them cuz that was a awfully high torgue and they said it was correct. Anyone torgued these things to 105 with success. Also with the head gasket, is there any special sealent or rtvs i should put on either side of the gasket. Thanks

I tried torquing mine to 100ft lbs and broke the first 1 going from 80 to 100 ft lbs. I ordered a new 1, torqued 20, 40, 50, 60, 70, 75 then 80ft lbs then it felt like I would A: strip the aluminum threads or B: Break another stud. So I stopped at 80 and haven't had a problem. I'm making 270whp.

So with your install did u use loctite or just the moly lube? What HG you running? I got this metal one but ive never used head studs or metal HG, ive did plenty of oem bolts and HG's but never tried the metal and concerned about if i need rtv or anything like the fsm recomends for the oem SR HG. Thanks again to for your quick response. Yeah i seen 105 ft lbs and I was like WTF! Its crazy

Don't put rtv on it. It will just burn off the first time you run it haha.Use the specific lube that arp supplies with the studs.I torqued mine in sequence to 105lbs on a new oem gasket and had no problems. Started right up and runs good

i torqued to arp spec, eveything good so far for a year with a cometic head gasket. if i had to do it again, which i might have to later, i would get the cosworth. though i really dont know if its the gasket but mines leaking at the back of the block on the exhaust side. its all damp down there from the head/deck surface down. but not blown in any way that i can tell.

So whats a safe amount of torque if your going to be doing around 350-400 hp? I just put my head on today and only torqued them in sequence to 85..so i need to do more?

I tq'd mine to 35 70 105 with an apexi headgasket. Ran for about an hour and a half and then wouldn't start again. Fuel: check. Spark: check. Compression: down 100 across the board. I think my head got f***ed when I blew my HG.

You should deck the head and block so that it is mirror smooth for a MLS head gasket. I decked the head and checked the block with a straight edge. The head came out very smooth but the block surface looked dull and I reused my MLS head gasket again (3rd clamp cycle) So I used copper gasket spray to insure that any little voids would be filled. I used a cometic on my ka and it leaked like a mofo. I now use cosworth on mt SR and haven't had any leaks. I would of went to 105 ft lbs but I could feel something bad was about to happen (I have broke a ton of bolts and have the feel down when you are about to break something). I didn't feel like helicoiling all the block stud holes even tho that would have made them alot stronger.

Just to make it clear:

Should I torque the Arp Head studs to 105 ft. or just to 80 ft?

I'm using a 1.5mm Cosworth HG and new ARP head studs (instuction sheet 105 ft torque). Block and head are decked.
