The kits on eBay for the CA18DET, do they just drop right in without modding the head? I heard rumors that the shaft of the bolt is too wide for the head and you have to drill out the holes on the head to make them bigger and also that the bolts are too long so you need washers. Im about 99.9% sure that the second rumor is true as Rafic told me about it but Im not too sure if there are a few different types of arp ca18det head studs.

Hi Cory,

I am not sure about the Kit on ebay, but the studs should drop in without any mods to the head what so ever.

I used these bolts on couple engines, and twice I had to double up the washers on two studs.

No drilling is required, don't even think about it.

Thanks.

Im still waiting on a response from the Justin guy in Florida. I doubt he'll be getting back to me anytime soon. I may be forced to call ARP and get the part number from them and match it up with the one on eBay to confirm they are the actual CA18DET head studs.

ARP does not sell a CA specific 'kit'. Its just assembled using studs that fit. People don't realize you can get an ARP bolt/stud for just about every fastener on the car provided you know the dimensions.

The easy way is to get an SR Main stud kit; this works as a CA head stud kit just fine, although you might need to double up on washers on one of the studs as the one over the waterpump can't go all the way down. This is because they don't *exactly* match what you need, but its so damn close length wise it works (the only difference).

Keep in mind you'll have to get a deeep socket (12mm or 1/2" can't recall) and grind down the outside of it to make it very thing walled to fit in the CA head.

I'd do just as boesehnsucht said. If you search the archives, I talked about it extensively about it and actually helped the company on eBay get the right set. I personally didn't have to double up washers over by the thermostat. They dropped right in. Almost finger tight. I did use an allen wrench and tighten them up a little past finger tight, but barely. You'll also have to get a 12 point deep well 3/8" drive socket with the outside ground down to install the nuts. If you do that, you'll be golden.

If you get a SNAP ON socket with part # sfm13 (13mm 12point socket), you don't need to regrind it, it will work as a charm.

OK, here's what's going on. INITIALLY ARP didn't have a head stud kit for the CA. So what you had to do was get a MAIN STUD KIT for the SR. After they heard about enough people doing this for the CA, they just went ahead and officially have a CA head stud kit now. So all you have to do is call ARP and ask for the part number for a CA head stud kit. It's really as simple as that.

Cliffnotes: Ignore all the SR crap. Just ask for a CA head stud kit

and it's cheaper from ARP to its like $92-$98 as opposed to the $107-$110 on ebay.

arg, running to problems again. i ordered the arp headstuds which states that its for the ca18de or det. But the threading is much finer than the stock headbolts. Anyone else run into that problem? i dont want to force it in or anything.

Yes, there is an error in the CA18 Head Stud kit... you NEED to order the SR20 main stud kit ARP 202-5402. I got them and they fit perfect.

I'm suspecting that there is a problem with ARP's headstud kit because of the variance between the EDM, and JDM/USDM motors. I don't have any first hand experience, but I suspect that for some reason, the EDM motors have a different thread pitch for the headbolts than the JDM/USDM motors do.

When I bought my first set, they seemed very suprised because he said that he'd been selling this same kit in the UK for a long time with out any problems.

DVD: I BELIEVE I got mine from bonwitt enterprise, returned it, and ordered the SR Main Stud kit from them with no problems. It did take them a while as they had to order the SR Main Stud Kit from ARP.

The headbolts are the same P/N (11056-D4200) for USDM CA16DE/CA18DE in the KN13 Pulsar, as well as EDM S13 CA18DET, and the various variations of CA16DE/CA18DE in B12, N13, T12 and T72, also JDM is of course again the same across all the CA16DE/CA18DE/CA18DET motors.

So, the thread pitch should be the same regardless. I don't know why the guys in the UK wouldn't have problems if they don't fit out JDM motors.

202-5402 works perfect. $98 from ARP direct.
