Do they light up blue-white or yellow-white? If they're HID Xenon lights they'll light up blue.

Is the headlight housing the same on the xenon and halogen? Only the bulbs are different?

Best way to tell is to figure out what option packages his car has.If he has the "driver preferred" package (heated steering wheel, spoiler, driver adjustable lumbar support, seat/wheel/mirror position memory, power folding mirrors, and the steering wheel and seat slide back when you open the door to make it easier to get out) then it has Xenon HID. Otherwise, it does not.

Another way to tell is just to turn the lights on in the garage. The Xenons will be very white with a thin bluish line at the top (cutoff). Non-xenons won't have such a clean cutoff and won't be as white or have the bluish line.
