My suggestions:
Memorize your social security number, then burn the card. You'll never need the card. Identity theft can wreak serious havoc on your life and credit. If you must have your card, keep it in a safe place at home, or in a safe deposit box or safe if you have one.
Never keep more than you can afford to lose in cash in your wallet. You're only potentially responsible for a limited amount on your credit and debit cards so it's much safer to carry those.
Keep only 1 or 2 credit cards on you at any given time. You will rarely have a need to have more than that at one time. Store specific cards are a bit safer since they would have to go to a specific place to use it and it can buy you some time to get the theft called in. Gas stations are usually the first place credit cards get used. I'd probably refrain from carrying around a checkbook as well. Most places take credit and check cards are easier to carry and better protected. I haven't written a check at a store for about 6 years. Hell, I maybe write 2 or 3 checks a year.
Get and use a PO Box. I initially got one to keep the parents out of my mail, but I've found many benefits to having one. For one, I use that address on my ID. My credit card bills are sent there so not only is my mail more secure, but anyone who obtains my ID won't know where I live. Secondly, Credit Card companies allow you to have a billing address for mail orders that you purchase with your credit card on file so that mail order companies can verify the billing address and shipping address is the same. Anyone who obtains your wallet will never know your shipping address and it will be harder for them to use the card. I've also found the PO Box is a great address to give out to people you don't trust as much. A friend of mine bought a stereo and alarm from a shop and a week later, the car was stolen and the stereo stolen. We suspect the shop did it. I had heard of this shop having done this before(the shop owner's son actually). Using a PO Box here would keep him from ever knowing where you live and park your car. It's amazing how much personal info we give to other people on a regular basis. I use my PO Box address for just about everything.
Lastly, know how to get a hold of all your creditors. Obviously, you don't the numbers in your wallet. But know where you can find it. Most of us rely on the web quite a bit. Most banks have websites. Memorize or bookmark each site so you can refer to it quickly if needed.
