This F'n thing literally expanded today while I was trying to fix my float problem. Could NOT get it to seat correctly. Then I everntually worked with it and thought I got it to seat correctly.....no way...full tank and it leaked a bit out top.
Are these parts available at a regular parts place? Its the rubber trim o ring that seals the fuel pump when its installed.

Mine did same thing!!! Here's what i did. Cut it, seat the seal, trim excess use high temp RTV on seam only, seals no leaks, temp fix ,but it is a fix none the less .still haven't replaced it, maybe next time if it won't seal
another thing to do is to use grease to make the seal stick to the tank. I used white lithium when i recently changed my fuel pump but if that doesnt work just use some wheel bearing grease. simply put some brease in the groove that the seal sits in and then carefully work it in there until it stays. it takes a little patience but it works. of course that seal is probably only a couple of dollars at the dealer but the closest dealer to me is 45 min away and i didnt foresee a problem until after i took the car apart so i had to use what i had with me.

I've long replaced the gasket. It was 10 bucks from Nissan. Basically the original must have gotten comtaminated. I asked the parts guy at a local dealership what would have done it and he said oil or anythinglike that.
Light bulb goes off in head.
When getting at the fuel pump I had to peel back some of that factory sound dampening tar like paper thats on the hatch floor. Got some of the oily based substance on my fingers which I kinda just rubbed into my jeans.
Musta never got it all off and when handling the gasket, it increased in size. This is not a gasket I would want to cut to make fit...and since its so cheap from the dealer...

well the o ring is made from rubber which when exposed to gas for 10+ years it is going to swell. most fuel tank seals do that naturally and once you remove the sender are nearly impossible to reinstall depending on how they go together. it our tanks had a different assembly they wouldnt be reusable at all. like i said i greased up the channel to make the seal stick in place long enough to reinstall the sending unit. but idealistically it should be replaced anyways i was just in a pinch.

there is a easy way to reuse it if you want to. All you need to do is as soon as you pull it out to replace the pump or what ever it is you are doing put the o-ring in the freezer. I would say atleast a half an hour. And then once you have the ever thing ready take it out and put it back were it goes. You have to be kind of quick about it because once it thaws it will swell up agian. I alway throw alittle rtv in the groove just incase.

Food for thought, it is this gasket that keeps the gas from coming out of your tank when you fill up. If the gasket is faulty, regardless of how tight you have the screws down...you risk gas escaping. Don't ask me how I know.
