Cost $37.50 to replace my airfilter at my shop

I have had three american cars and they cost me $8 to replace the airfilter.

then, $37.50 had to be referring to K&N. I think a k&N filter should be cheaper.

speaking of K&N, has anyone removed their airbox and stuck the conical K& N in its place? Anything to worry about? What kind of performance increase are we talking about?

Do a search on the cone filter--its been done. Members are a bit divided on the subject. You're weighing the benefit of increased air flow against the detriment of higher intake temps and (possibly) less effective filtering. Q45Tech could probably write a treatise on why you shouldn't use a cone filter. But of course a cold air box would mitigate the higher intake temp.

K&N is Bad.Bad for sensors, some of the oil from the K&N filtermedia is known to coat it.

Also you may Lose performance due to hi underhood temps, which result in less dense air being ingested. Also K&n dont filter as well Q45tech did some tests that show those filters eat extra dirt compared to factory. If you want a performance edge make sure it runs perfect (clean TB, newer plugs etc) or add a JWT ECU as sold by BAD or Stillen. Also the 4.08 diff is available for the Q.

if you put on a cone you will need ducting to protect it from the heat. i had one on, but in the summer when it was 100 degrees out the car idled bad and stalled a couple times, so i took it off.

ok, I am convinced. No cone.

A transmission chip and JWT(what does this stand for anyhow) would sure be nice, but chain guides and transmission cooler first

It's a better deal to order a bunch of OEM air filters (about $10 each??) from Scottsdale and replace them once a year.

I know people have problems with cone filters in summer because of excessive underhood heat... not sure if that's an issue with K&N drop-in filter, but I'm sure you're getting more dirt in the engine and intake which will eventually REDUCE power and necessitate expensive cleaning.

Not to mention contaminated readings if the MAF gets greasy from the oil on the filter.....

I say get your money back or give it to someone else.
