I'm looking at buying a CA18DET to rebuild, and the guy sent me pics. It has some rust in a couple bores that looks like it could be final honed away, but it might be deeper than that, requiring a rebore and new pistons, which is fine. I planned on forged goodies anyways but I was curious if these 04 marks on them might mean it was a .040 overbore already done at one point. I wouldn't want to buy a block that had been rebuilt and bored out pretty deep already. So I figured I'd post on here and maybe you guys who work with CA18s on a regular basis could tell me if it was an OE piston it left the factory with or not.

I don't know if that means they're .040 or not. They LOOK like stock pistons. Does he have a digital caliper? He should be able to measure it and tell you the bore of the engine.

I believe those pistons are stock. Don't feed too much into the "O4" you see. Do know that the piston grade is "3".
