You do not have to register your motor swap in the state of North Carolina. The only state that requires that is CALIFORNIA. If your car is manufactured before 1996 (pre-OBDII), all that is required is a visual inspection at a local inspection garage for $9.00 including the yearly inspection sticker. If your car has a check-engine light and is OBDII, I wouldn't bother taking it to get inspected because 9 times out of 10 it will FAIL.

It will pass if it doesn't throw codes or fail the sniffer. I don't think it's technically legal, but you can get away with it as many do. Ask around on carolinanissans.com lots of guys there have SRs and RBs in NC, plus its like the best 240 site ever.

From his info...he has a 91 model. I'm sure whatever he decides to throw under the hood will be no problem. Most of the time, the inspection guy doesn't even pop open the hood. Last time, when I had my old turbocharged Civic hatch inspected, it passed with no problems. I don't even think he knew it was swapped and was turbocharged.

Uhmm...how can it be the best 240 site ever...when it shows this:

There are 7 online users browsing:6 members and 1 visitors

I think I would rather stick to this website.

But a good number of the people on this site are 16 year old douschebags that just got a 240 to go drifting, plus you can meet the people in person on a local forum and get to know them instead of just knowing a screename.

yea its legal..you only need to pass the safety test on pre 96' cars

but you you cant do a silvia front end conversion..it doesn't have the side position lights, if you car came with it..it has to be there. i already asked the inspection guy that comes in an eats at where i work

but hes building a sweeeet mkIII supra, and hes come by and helped me work on my car, hes gonna weld up a patch for my rust spot and what not..it helps to know people who do the tests, he said he'd "look over it"if it happened to not show up

side postion lights?....what are you referring to?

The guy that I take my car to every year is simple and NO HASSLE. Just as long as the tires are not bald and parts not sticking out that my hurt others, he doesn't really give a sh*t what your car "came with" from the factory. I think some inspectors are making up their own rules/laws as they go along....just like some cops I have dealt with in the past.

Do you think it may vary from county to county? Like I stated, the inspection guy told me just as long as the car is safe to drive, he doesn't really care about what is actually on the car. Oh snaps!! My inspection is due this month on my coupe....

i'm also on carolinanissans.com and it's a pretty slow site. anyways, here is the skinny on engine swaps in NC. basicly if your car is 1995 or earlier, you do not have to pass any sort of emissions test. They only do safety checks. They will check for emission equipment so it only has to look like you have all the equipment on your car (or at least most of it...). So you can have an engine swap and get away with it. Seeing as how 240's came with a resonator that looks like a cat, as long as you keep that, make your carbon canister look like its hooked up (or hook it up, doesn't matter) you should be good to go. Having a friend that does inspections doesn't hurt either.
