Typical "lifetime" guaranteed shocks are built with OEM performance in mind. If you like the damping characteristics of OEM shock absorbers, or if you can't tell the difference between OEM and KYB, Tokico, etc, then you might want to consider the "lifetime" deal.
The reason they have a lifetime warranty is they are cheap to manufacture, warranty is a good selling point, everybody could use new shocks, and when you come in to get new shocks every so often, the installer will dig for other problems on your car to try and fix for you at full shop rate. By your second set of lifetime shocks, if the installer is doing his job correctly and finding other things that need fixing....and is able to convince you to let them perform this extra work, the shop will make it's money back(and then some) on the "free", "lifetime" shock replacement.
It's a thinly veiled attempt at getting your car back up on the rack, where they can "advise" of other work that needs to be done.
They sell "lifetime" shocks with a guarantee that if they go bad, you are guaranteed a new set of shocks....which is true(unless you read the fine print about lowered suspension), but it is also a guarantee that you will come back to their shop and spend MORE of your money with them.
They sell you cheap shocks for profit...they win.
They replace cheap shocks under "lifetime" guarantee...and at the same time find $350 worth of other work that they "recommend be done"...and you OK this extra work.....they win.
High performance wear items(shocks, brakes, tires) do not carry a lifetime guarantee.Lifetime guaranteed products are not considered high performance parts.
