Are people idiots or is it just me....

Discussion of Infiniti's amazing (and underrated) sport-luxury crossovers, the EX35 and EX37. For 2014, the EX series will be renamed QX50, in line with Ininfiit's new naming conventions.

I now have 26,000 miles on the EX since I got it. It is my company car and drive it every day and it is doing just what I expected from it...no disappointments...and I still love watching it go through the carwash.

But I gave my input on Edmunds when I first got it and have gone back and read other comments on various sites...and I'm wondering if it's just me or are people idiots?

The three things people whine about are gas milage, cargo hauling space and rear leg room...and I'm just wondering if these people were having an out of body experience when they went shopping for the car?

The gas milage is awesome to me...nearly 300hp and fun as hell to get on it...and I always get between 23.5 to 24.5 mpg on the interstate @ 72mph...and always at least 19.8 0 20.2 if I eat up a tank in the city.

The cargo space has been awesome and the leg room a non-issue.

So basically the car fits my lifestyle just as I thought it would so no complaints... :wtf2: ...did the people with complaints just go brain dead when they were evaluating the car before purchase? Do they want a 300hp car to get 27 in the city and 38 on the highway and when it doesn't they give it a 4 rating for gas milage...is it just me? :gotme

Well said.. it's not like the car shrunk after they bought it, and fuel mileage figures are posted.. so no surprises there. These would be the same people that buy a house next to an airport then complain about the noise!

This is what I think...

Is gas mileage an issue for me? Yes. Was it an issue when I about to drive my EX home? No. I sold my WRX wagon for a lightly bigger and better mileage car (real life 20mpg with dyno 360 crank hp) and on paper the EX got a little better mpg… but real life I am getting about 18 mpg which is less than my lot faster turbo car…

Is the cargo area bigger than my WRX wagon? Yes. But am I able to use the space? No. I can’t use the space because I don’t want to damage the elegant interior and my leather seats… I have to cover everything in a blanket when I need to carry my stuff around which is a PITA thing to do.

Was the rear legroom an issue for me? I don’t know… When I went test drove the EX, I secretly move the front seats forward so my brother can seat behind me. And the phrase “The rear leg room is pretty decent” came out from my mouth. When I got the car, I position the seat to what I normally would and no one can seat behind me anymore… The rear leg room is even smaller than my WRC wagon… So now I just keep my rear seats down and use it as a 2 seater.

So you asked, are people stupid? Yes… Why? Because they wanted to convince themselves this is the perfect product for them. Only after few months they realized now they liked something else so all this issues start to popping out. It’s another way to convince themselves to get a new car.

I can see how people can get caught up in the moment with a car purchase but what you see is what you get.

Jason,
I agree 100% with you. The EX is not for everyone, but it is about perfect for me. I had a G coupe but wanted something a bit more roomy- for some cargo, and yet still fun to drive. And since my kids are off, rear seat is nice to have, but room back there was not an issue at all. Just having a couple of seats are good- and yes, they are usable.

The ride is a bit softer then my G, which the wife likes, and having AWD is a plus with us living in Michigan. I give up some acceleration, but I'll take the additional drive wheels.

I do wish the EX had some additional storage places though. Door pockets like my G had would do the trick.
But yeah, I've got no regret with the purchase and I scratch my head with some of the comments that buyers make. Like didn't they know it when they were buying it?

I regret getting my 2010. They took away the self-heeling paint. I wished I knew about this car earlier and got 2008 or 2009 instead. Don't know why I need it and don't know how good it is, but it sounds good on paper :)

Are you sure? Everything I read about my 2010 says the paint has self-healing resin.

So what make you think it does???

I didn't see Infiniti mentioned about self-healing clearcoat paint starting in 2010 for the EX35 when I bought it. I asked dealer and was told they no longer offered with EX35!!!

Search this forum and you will see a few say no and some not quite sure. I hope my 2010 has it. But if such a feature is offered then Infiniti will definitely mentioned it in "key features"

The self-healing paint is not all that it's cracked up to be. I personally think it is more of a marketing gimick than a useful feature. In the nearly 2 years of ownership, I have yet to see a single scratch "heal".

If the self-healing paint is the only feature that is missing, you'll be OK and shouldn't be disappointed with your purchase. I would hardly classify the self-healing paint a key feature and a make or break point for the purchase of the EX.

Go to the Infiniti Canada website....then look under specifications....then look at the "exterior" specs and you will see "scratch shield"....How good it works is another story. Actually there is a You tube video on it....

If I remember later, I'll look for the reference, and I'm definite it was listed in the literature for my 2010.

By the way, the paint resin is only intended to heal very thin scratches, such as fingernail marks by the door handle or swirl marks from washing off dust. Also, it's a very gradual healing process, as the resin takes a week or two to re-flow. It won't do miracles, and you won't see it happening before your eyes.

I imagine it will make a bigger difference when the car is a few years old. I always notice swirl marks from washing after a car is about 5 years old. If this paint delays that effect by even a couple years, that's awesome.

You do realize the EX35 is much heavier than your WRX wagon, try 600+ lbs heavier, part of the reason for less fuel economy. Any car is going to have it's interior damaged if you don't use care or cover things you are transporting, LOL! The rear leg room is tight on the EX, but still usable. At 5'10 (i'm in good shape, not overweight) I can still have people sit behind me or I can sit back there. It depends on the size and weight of the passengers/driver.

I too, have heard that the Self-healing Paint was not an option for 2010... but it's possible that some got it.

This same Option sheet said they were supposed to get a Tonneau Cover too, and we all know how that turned out.

There are some good points mentioned by the OP...

People are nuts (not bad, or dangerous nuts). They tend to take to the internet when there is a problem, or something they dislike. There are only a few EX owners out there and there are less enthusiasts. More power to you for driving a car you still really like. The internet gives voice to all for better or worse. lol nah it keeps me busy and it is still fun.
