If the car has sat in the same place too long, it can cause issues. But after some driving, they get back to round.
The main thing is the environment they have been stored in. UV rays and o2 both cause issues with rubber. I bag my race tires over the winter to minimize it. I have no idea if it makes any difference or not, but I feel better about it.
I would say, as long as you don't have any bubbles in the side walls or dry rot, I wouldn't worry too much about it.
As far as the tire not having any grip left, well, they probably don't have as much as they once did, and most, if not all of the new tires in the same category as the MX's are WAY faster than that tire. So a New set of tires will have better grip. But if you are still having fun on them, who cares. If they are hard as rocks, and you want some new tires, go burn em' off and get a new set of stickies.
