my line is rated at 10,000 kbps down/1,000 kbps up. when downloading from a fast server, i can exceed 1.15 MB/sec [yes, megabytes per second]
LOL. I like the way that you typed that. You used 10,000kbps. At first, it seems like alot, but if you calculate it out, it's about average. 1.2MBps.

Is that so bad

You need a Proxy server that has image compression.Like Propel's* (the one People PC uses for "5X faster dial-up") Proxy server software.

I live in the stix( Stix= no broadband).I am the owner of New Mexico's first Direcway dealership.I have used two-way Direcway satillite for 5 years.my warranty ran out on a ITU (Internet Transmitter Unit) and it blew about six months later. I ordered a new one and could not stand not being fully connected and ordered a free trial of there software with the Accelerator.and I was blown away it pulled data off the net.
I know exactly what you are talking about with software supposedly speeding up your connection. This software programs to not work like they are advertised to. They to not Speed up your connection. They usually just disable or compress things.
Netzero advertises that their software is "5x faster" than standard dial-up. They gained this "increased speed" by tweaking registry settings.
I just went into the registry and changed the buffers, send/receive packet size, and a few other things. I noticed a huge increase from doing this, and I am only on dial-up.
I edited the registry on one of my friends computers (he has cable broadband). Before I changed anything, he was getting an average of 1.12MBps. After the change, his average speed increased to 1.4MBps. Quite significant, considering that his maximum download speed is supposed to be 1.2MBps (supposedly limited by Cable Company).

My High School had the main servers set up as proxies. It's amazing how stupid kids are. I gained acess to these servers, and ran a simple packet scan. I must have picked up everthing from SSN to Mother's Maiden name. Kids really are oblivious to the "appliance" they are using.

Cable is better in all way but:Always on !!MUST be in area!!So much bandwith most people don't know how much spyware they have on there systems coming and going.and COST$$$!!!.
I don't like the idea of an "always on connection". I've dabbled in the "game" of hacking. It's amazing how "easy" it is to gain administrator privileges when you can "work" on the host from 12AM through 7AM undisturbed.

Though arguably, if I actually had to pay, I might not bother anyway. I might also have been more reluctant to post on NICO if I had a slower connection.
Sure you could still do all of that stuff. I "Steal" all that stuff even though I am on Dial-up. I just go to a friends house who has RR.
