i guess my post doesnt have much to do with nissans or even cars, but i've been obessed with motorcycles for about 2 years now and i think that finally this summer comming up im gonna purchase a yamaha R6. I really like the new R1s and the fast as **** suzuki gixer 1000 but i cant afford them...what gets me really cracked up is that every single person i talk to about motorcycle has had a friend or knows somebody that died or is in coma due to a motorcycle accident. do any of you own bikes or have had any experiences on motorcycles?

peace:ylsuper

have you seen the thread with the pictures of the motorcycle crash? IMO nothing is dangerous if youre careful or skilled enough.

In my opinion after owning four motorcycles, yes they are dangerous. But if you ride like you have some sense, they are less dangerous.

I have totalled three out of the four I owned, and wrecked one twice. Low sided, high sided (hurt), flipped backwards, and hit a cadilac (really hurt).

There is nothing you can do about the other guy out there. They are trying to kill you, even if they dont know it. But you can make yourself safer. Take a rider safety course, and wear proper gear.

Helmet, gloves, boots, and an armored or leather jacket. My helmet saved my life. Landing on your head after flying over a car can screw up your day.

They are fun, but can get you killed really fast. Riders around here have been dropping like flies the past two years.

Average lifespan of a motorcyclist in Phoenix, who commutes 12 miles per day, M-F, and takes 2 15-mile rides on the weekend is pretty consistent from year to year:

18 months.

No thanks - I'll stick with my 4200-lb. protective cocoon. :D

That might be true if you ride on a closed course, but there's no way to eliminate all variables. You can't eliminate the dangers without taking away all the fun. I still love 'em (owned 4 myself), but I won't get one because of a previous accident. Ask anyone who has ridden for a while...most accidents don't happen because *you* screw up. Most of the time it's because someone else doesn't see you. Sometimes there's just nowhere to go when that happens, and if you're traveling above 5mph, it's going to hurt.

See the disturbing pics thread and, if you can, talk to any ER worker about the most gruesome motor vehicle accidents they've seen. Everyone in that line of work has stories to tell of motorcycle accidents.

Not a matter of being cool - It's a matter of being rational.

I don't ride any more, but I don't have a problem with "cool" either.

p.s. I still love to ride, but the risks FAR outweigh the fun factor.

Whenever someone asks if motorcycles are dangerous the answer is very simple: yes, they are.

I know I've told this story before so I'll summarize briefly for your benefit. I'm not saying you are stupid enough to do this, but it happened.

My friend (3000GT VR-4) was out at the street races and a motorcycle guy decided to run against him on his brand new GSXR for fun. At around 120 mph, he passed my friend, hit a beer bottle and lost control. The road curves, he slid in a straight line and hit a ~10x5x2 foot concrete sign. The impact of his body cracked the sign in half and killed him on impact, turning his bones into mush. As a result my friend was hit with vehicular manslaughter due to his involvement in the race. He was in jail for 3 months and spent 3 months on house arrest with the ankle locator thing. He just recently got it off and can now leave his house again, but he is on probation for something like 5 years and can't drive for 3 years. The motorcyclist got the even worse end of the deal - he lost his life and was about to get married.

This is the reason I will never buy a motorcycle or go to street races.

Bikes are crazy. They are fast as heck, look very fun, but its not worth your life...

Crashing comes with the territory. It's not a matter if you'll have an accident or not, that's a given, it's a matter of when. When I was in college I couldn't afford shelling out $50 a week for gas and couldn't stand pubtrans so I got around in an old Kawasaki.

After three safe years, some idiot cut a red light AND SLAMMED E BRAKES MIDWAY THROUGH THE INTERSECTION! I ended up slamming into him and doing a tripple-sowkow in the air. Broke three ribs, broke my collar bone, fracture my left femur in two separate spots and had countless nicks and scratches. At the time I was in peak physical condition (6'5" 265lbs. and absolutely ripped at the time) and normally recuperated from sports injuries very quickly. It took four months of heavy physical therapy and rehabilitation to walk normally again.

I'm not trying to discourage you bro, but you have to realize the risks. If you ride, ride sparingly and stay away from stupid antics!!

I know exactly how it feels to think, for just a brief moment, that I'm going to die. I promise it is a horrible feeling to think about it, even years later. There is nothing cool about it, or about lying in a pool of your own blood with bones projecting every which way. I was fortunate enough to wake up several hours later in the ER, with "only" a shattered leg that bothers me daily and which will do so for the rest of my life. I landed between a street sign and a telephone pole, and just short of a concrete wall. No helmet, so I was literally feet, if not inches, from death. Keep in mind, all this occurred at about 25 mph, and because of someone else's mistake. It is not hard to argue that riding a motorcycle is a very selfish act.

Not sure if you guys have seen this one video, but this guy has a camera mounted on his bike, he's doing around 80-90 or something. Then you see this deer's head stick out and he hits it. He falls off the bike and everything, he was wearing leathers and safety equipment and all, he only hurt his leg, and skun up his hands. It seemed pretty unreal that he didn't get hurt to me, but it's good to not see pictures of dead people all the time.:)

kinda like watching guys on the superbikes slide about 50 ft then get up and walk around for a few minutes

a lot is riding smart but the majority of it is watching out for other people.

flipped my gsxr a couple times, street raced it, drag raced it, wheelied, ****ed off, had fun, will do it again later. always wore gear though.

yes they're dangerous, yes I'm the reason they're dangerous (to me) and yes those other ****ers ARE out to kill you.

Yes they are fun though and YES ALWAYS WEAR GEAR I have a hook-up for some of the best gear made so if you get a bike, hit me up for a good price on great gear. It WILL save you a lot of pain, it saved my *** (litterally)

since when have motorcycles been dangerous? I mean look at all the protection you have around you!

seriously, of course they can be and are! even if you're the safest driver they are still dangerous.

one of my teaches in college got rearended at a stoplight on his bike at 60 mph, he now has a prostetic leg.my g/f moms boyfriend had a groundhog run in front of him causing him to break 3 ribs.and there are tons of other bike wreck stories that dont end up so lucky!

anything can happen and theres nothing around you should you flip over, just hope that you're wearing a lot of thick leather that the road wont eat through!

I'd love to have one but, i'd be dead in less than a year if i had one.

Aztek72, Yeah, that physical therapy sucks bad. We pay some really cheerfull person to smile, be funny, and hurt us.

DAEDALUS, I never thought I was going to die in any of my wrecks, while they were happening. I always sort of figured I get killed on the bike, never planned on living past 25 anyway. Now I am 27 and have to live with the pain of the foolish mistakes I made. Screwed up shoulder, messed up thumb, and my knee is weird too. When were young, we dont think about having to live with pain for years to come.

I couldn't figure out why my shoulder was hurting the way it was this weekend. Then it started raining. I never really belived old people about your bones hurting when the rain was coming. What an idiot I was.

I loved riding, but I like breathing a whole lot more.
