jus got my z32 front calipers, and I noticed that they didn't come with the brake pad shims. I've read that some people don't use them. I don't feel like spending another 50+ just for shims... Are they absolutely necessary? Is there any adverse affect on performance, or is it just a noise issue?

Lastly, I read that some after market pads come with shims already, like Hawk pads. Do other brands, like Axxis, come with them too?

Most higher end pads will come with the shims attached to the backing plate of the pad. It's mostly for vibration/noise reduction and to a minor extent to reduce heat transfer to the caliper itself. I just did the brakes on my wife's minivan last weekend using the Hawk HPS pads and the factory style shims were already attached to the pads.

It is just a noise issue for our cars. I wouldn't worry about it for S, Z or Q brakes.

you could squirt that noise reducing goo on there to reduce the squeal.

I've used the pad goop before and it works fine. I'd also suggest getting a caliper hardware kit with new springs/clips. That should be done every time you change pads. Those wear out fast.

Where can I get springs and clips for both front and rear? I know PDM has the front, but I can't find any for the rear. Should I replace the pins as well?

Also, should I replace the piston seals as well? Is this something I can do by myself, or does it require special tools?

You should be able to get all the springs and clips from coutresy nissan. replacing the seals on the pistons is always a good idea. I got mine for $12 at oreillys autoparts. You use an air compressor to take out the pistons. Get that attachment that just blows air to clean up the shop with. Stick it in the brake line hole and the pistons will pop out. Watch out though, they will be coming out with some force. after you get them all out. replace the thick O-ring inside the caliper. then you install the new dust boot on the piston, and then replace the piston into the caliper. Finally install the new ring clamps onto the outer edge of the dust boots. Good as new.
