Are ASP Underdrive pulleys safe?

I heard they can give you about 9hp to the wheels, but I also heard that they allow the crank to flex, because of the harmonic balancer removal. Are these safe? Anyone have one?

i got one and have had it on for several thousand miles (6 months) and have had no problems.

KA's dont have harmonic dampeners, they are internally balanced, so yes, theyre safe, and a very cost effective upgrade.

From here on out, if anyone tells you that a KA has a harmonic damper in the pulley could you do me a favor and drag them into the street and bludgeon them to death with your shoe? Thanks. I'm really tired of that myth.

I've yet to see someone definitively show that a lightweight pulley caused engine failure...so, yeah, I'd get the pulley.

One thing to keep in mind is that unless ASP corrected the problem, the timing marks on that pulley are off. This will make setting your timing somewhat interesting.

First of all you guys who say there is no harmonic damper in the KA are just spewing second hand $hit without actually knowing anything.

In the stock crank pulley, there is a rubber ring which acts as a harmonic damper.

That being said, I have used the ASP pulley for about 30k mi and many others have as well, with higher horsepower turbo motors up to 400hp. I have spoken about this before just do a search for "harmonic".

P.S. My ASP pulley has the correct timing marks on it, and I've had it for 3 years.

Find me where it says "harmonic dampener" in the FSM, and I'll send you a cookie.

From what I've read, and been told by people who've asked race shops (specifically, Sunbelt)...it's ONLY to reduce driveline shock when the A/C kicks on.

A REAL harmonic dampener would be bigger.

...and the one on the crank pulley isn;t rubber...it's metal, bonded to the pulley by a thin rubber ring.

Oh...and my ASP pulley has served me well for the last 5 years - But's it's worth maybe 4-5rwhp, NOT 9rwhp.

Brian,

Just out of curiousity, are the timing marks on your pulley correct?

I've had my ASP pulley on for 3 years.... 1 of which has been under boost and I've had 0 problems.

TDC is correct, and 20* BTDC is correct...but the 5,10, and 15 marks are a little off...more like 6 12, and 16...it's just uneven spacing.

All I need is 0 and 20, so it's OK by me!

From what I've heard and read, it would more appropriately be called a durometer. In talking with Don Nimi at PDM (Wish I still had the email to copy and paste), he runs an aftermarket pulley (or at least used to) on his car and has not had any problems. However, he does not offer them at PDM because of the possible vibration issues that could be bad for the engine (in theory, don't personally know of any catastrophic failures). And before anyone yells at me, this is second hand knowledge from my research. Yes there are tons of KAs running an underdrive pulley flawlessly. I personally decided to run the only other option- clutch-type harmonic damper by Fisher Concepts (per my mechanic, a good looking piece, but the customer service there is horrible), more expensive but I'm hoping it will ensure the engine's longevity.
