Well, this is simple and to the point, has anyone ever had a problem with the rear mount thats welded to the muffler, breaking at the weld? I just noticed mine did and it rattles like a SOB. My next question is, since it is stainless steel, it cannot be MIG wleded right? It HAS to be TIG welded if I am right, anyone know for sure?

ThanksRick Merinahttp://www.ka-t.org <---Yes, that engine IS for Sale!

You *can* MIG weld stainless.

It should hold fine though.

Is it alot harder to find someone to TIG weld?

Yeah, nearly all shops have a MIG. TIG's take more skill and are scarecer. Although, any good fab shop is gonna have both.

Personally, I'd have it MIG welded for a couple reasons. It's a hanger so nobody is going to see it anyway. Who cares what it looks like. Second, MIG welding you can build up the weld a lot easier than when TIG welding so you can actually make it stronger than if TIG welding. You can MIG straight carbon steel with stainless too so you don't HAVE to find someone with a stainless MIG setup either.

Maybe the hangers weren't welded with stainless wire/rods?

Who knows, I figure if I weld enough on it with the MIG it is bound to stay there one way or another. J/k, The car is getting ready to be sold so its just one more thing i have to do before I sell it.

Do any of you know what settings to use on the MIG?

Rick Merinahttp://www.ka-t.orgAnyone wanna buy that engine? :) :)

So the muffler weld broke? So your muffler dangles like a ***** then, ive never heard of this happening on an APEXi N1, i though they were pretty good, guess im not getting one now. Guess you'll have to get a new one or contact the company, mabye they'll give you a new one, could have been a defect.

I can votch for the broken N1 dual. After i started driving my car again, i noticed a chiming sound from the back, so thinking my exhaust was rubbing some place, i got under and found that not the last brack had broken but the one right before the muflers, it had riped i nice hole in the side of the exhaust, about a quarter in size. I will get my digcam some batterys and take a pic so you can all see. kind of sucks, but should be an easy fix, just take it into a mufler shop.

The weld is only as strong as the metal its welded to. I mean, if the metal around the weld gives, the weld doesnt mean ****. I doubt apex-i manufactures the tubing they use for the exhaust, so they really cant be held accountable for inconsistancies in the metal tubing itself. Its a basic mild or aluminuzed steel general tube, its not aircraft quality or mil spec type part...

That guy saying hes not going to buy one, becuase a few out of how many thousands have broken is rediculous. Some are bound to give, given the amount of shock and vibrations it sees every single day from every little bump. My suspension is rather stiff and the roads around my rouse are pretty damn rough in areas not to mention the florida paving contractors must be high when they pave new roads now, as every single one sucks worse then before they pave it. My N1 has held up beatifully through this, bottoming out on a drop in the bridge a few times at 80 - 85 mph, various other high speed bangs, a cat at 45 dead in the road nailing it (heard it bouce the whole way back)... Then their was one time the 240 broke down and had to be towed home. When they where putting it into the spot in my drive way the N1 muffler hit the ground mangling the driveway, as it got pushed into the bumper support, but didnt get hurt.

Sorry about your luck, and if you do mig it, make sure their mig is setup for SS welding, as the weld will be compromised, and also rust if not done right.

Edit: to sk8erguy, you said your not getting an N1 but list it in your mods???? Hows that work, or did you grab one in the last 1.5 days?

settings will be the same for mild steel. depending on the machine, and material thickness, somewhere around 16 volts and 130-140 ipm wire speed should be close for exhaust tubing. use stainless wire, not standard mild steel stuff, which is usually unshielded, er70-s13, and copper in color. it will definitely hold long enough to sell it.john
