I just purchased a new J30 and it seems to be an excellent car. The guy I purchased it from, however, purchased it from a repo auction. He was able to get most of the records from the infiniti dealer. Seems that all the regular maintenance was done up until a year ago, but then there are no records beyond that. I'm thinking that because the car was repossed the person that did own it probably didn't bother spending $1000 on the timing belt/etc, but then again I don't really know for sure. The car is currently at 114k miles. I can't afford for the engine to go, but I also don't want to spend $1000 if I don't have to. Is there anyway at all for a shop to determine whether or not the belt needs replaced without tearing apart the whole engine? Thanks!

Mike

The manual states for 93 and 94 years the belt must be changed at 60k. 95 and up at 105k. You have to pay to play and a failed timing belt will absolutely total your interference type engine.

What year is your J? All replacement belts were of the reinforced kelvar type.

The $1000 you refer to includes a host of other maintenance items that can and should be done at the same time. A busted hose and resultant overheating will toast your engine as surely as 24 uncontroled valves smashing into pistons.

I've got a 96, so 105k would have been 9k ago. I'll probably just get it done and allay all of my worries for the next little while ;0) Thank you!

There's plenty of ppls that do the timing belt alot cheaper than $1000.. try $400Qualified too...The belts can't be looked at and someone say they need replacing unless thy're hanging on by a thread.. Just changed cams, intake, injectors, ecu upgrade, coolant by pass over the week end on a TT which requires re setting the timing belt Bill was $1200
