Right now, the head unit is powered on by connecting the red power wire from the head unit to the ACC power on wire in the factory harness... this is either done through direct splicing or through an adapter... to do what you are trying to do, you would simply need to connect that power wire to the yellow "always hot" wire that goes directly to the battery...
your head unit may already havbe a fuse installed in the back of the unit, but if not, defniately install an in-line fuse.
and yes, you can hook this up to a switch, it may work ok as long as you don't have the bose system or any amplifiers installed... that may complicate things a bit... it may not, because most amps are turned on via a remote signal wire, but I've never exactly done this before so I'm not sure...
if ur gonna do this, I would replace the stock battery... that thing will die pretty quickly if ur stereo is running directly from it.... you need a deep discharge battery for what you are trying to do... preferably the Kinetik KHC 1800
