k, i had to change the head gasket, and so the crank timing chain is kind of not aligned, anyway i could get it aligned without having to take out the front cover?(which aparently i have to take down the oil pan to take out the oil pump which is attached to the front cover), or can i just slide out the front cover with the pump?

Not quite sure I understand your question 100%, but if you think your chain is off the only way to get to it is remove the front cover. The only way to remove the front cover is to remove the oil pickup. The only way to do that is to drop the pan.

If you're doing all that stuff, you may as well replace all of your timing chain guides and tensioners (lower ones at least) and make sure your oil pump is within spec and the screen on the pickup isn't clogged. New gaskets, etc.

I plan on doing all that junk and then putting in some Nismo engine mounts while up jacking up the engine to get at the oil pan. Luckily for me, that won't happen until Spring. That's gonna be big fun.

heh, well, what am gonna do now is take the whole engine back out.........have to do some work on the oil pan(forgot to put that paint or whatever to not let it rust), might as well do the rest, allready replaced the chain guides, and this time i'll so put the timing marks right.(i don't feel like doin the whole engine again, aparently the valves got bent last time.

not sure about the timing stuff, but to remove the lower cover you have to drop the pan to unbolt the pickup. i also found it easier to drop the subframe to have more room. pita really, but i replaced the pcv and lower oil seal while i had it apart. took it apart to replace the front cover after breaking the thermostat housing

the distributer sets ignition timing, the timing of the spark, the Crank timing, or physical timing is the timing of the camshafts and the crankshaft. With the engine on TDC and look at the cam sprockets, they should have a notch on then that also line up with TDC. The chain should also have darker colored links(can be hard to see on a old chain) that match up with the notch on the cam sprocket. to adjust you would have to remove the chain then put it back on with the propper number of links between the sprokets(as shown by the off colored links). sounds like you have to remove the timing chain cover, but you can take off only the upper one first to check. You dont have to drop the pan for the top cover, so you can atleast makesure before you have to drop te pan
