THE V is going on Friday. I complained enough that they are starting to chage parts. Today the klunk was so loud......... it scared me!! My students say....... is that normal.? I am like..it's ok, the dealer says it's ok!

So, now, they decided to change the strut mounts.

Will it fix it?

The sound it makes is when I usually turn to the right. It's a "klunk" and I can feel it in my feet.

Here's to hope it's fixed!

They fixed mine last month and took away most of the clunking noise. I think there is something wrong with the steering column as well Im gunna wait till all the snow and stuff is gone and im able to give it a good wash underneath cause they used the excuse before there was ice and gravel getting in places

they replaced mine last weekend, but it didnt saolve the problem. they sayed since i lowered it that they wont do anything else under warrenty. they want to put oem parts back on and further diagnose it, charging me for parts and labor. then if it still is there it will be under warranty again. i said f*** it.

Based on the experience I had, when you say it happens when you turn to the right and hear a clunk, I would hope they look at the steering column. When they replaced mine it fixed that specific problem. No more clunk when turning to the right, knock on wood.

When you say it is loud and you can feel it through your feet, that is way more serious of a clunk than my car had, but maybe it gets worse with time. Maybe my car would have gotten that bad if the dealership hadn't found the problem and fixed it.

Be sure to let us know how (if) they fix it.Good luck, it can be frustrating.

Steering Joint Assembly...that was what was replaced on mine and it got rid of the klunk. That was last September and it is still gone.

I was always able to reproduce it by moving at a slow speed (like a parking garage speed) and then turning the wheel 1 1/4 times to the right.

I do not own a versa yet, (getting quotes) but the klunk problem sounds very similar to what my 2005 Camry had. Does the versa have an intermediate shaft in the steering column? This was the problem with newer Camrys, the intermediate shaft had a problem and you would feel a Klunk in the steering wheel. It did not happen all the time nor did it matter which side you were turning. I did notice it was most likely to happen in the morning at first start/drive.

Seeing that many automakers use parts from a common manufactuer and the symptoms are so similar it may be worth checking out. The repair cost was covered under warranty by Toyota.

Thanks Hox Knightro2

But is steering clunk a serious problem - will the front end drop off?

Or is it just an annoying idiosyncrasy?

I have my car safetied every 6 to 8 months and when they change the oil, they usually have a "once over" and they assure me that every thing is ok and I can't ever duplicate the sound. Today.....yes today, the klunk was so loud it actually sounded like I ran over a hard piece of frozen ice chunk when I was turning...............

LIKE DRIVING OVER A FROZEN CHUNK OF ICE!!!!!!!

54320-ED02A is a new strut bearing design that is on a TSB for the Versa. The original design allowed debris to accumulate in the bearing causing premature failure and knocking sounds. The bearing seizes and causes the spring to turn in it's perch. Typically, it turns several times until the spring falls back into it's place on the bottom of the strut, causing the knock and the car to feel like it's dropping on one side. This is the only repetitive complaint we've had for Versas at our dealership, and every single one of them were vehicles where the owner lived on dirt roads. This may be occuring up north now due to the salt and corrosion that occurs during winter time.

I had my 'growly' compressor recharged (not replaced) runs much quieter now.

$120 dealer service EVACUATE AND RECHARGE COMPRESSOR. Tech advised noise caused by unbalanced charge on compressor.

Your problem is whatsoever non-related to his issue

Definitely sounds like a steering or suspension part though. Mine does that once in a while also on right turns mainly.

I had the same problem. Dealership said the strut bearings shouldn't hurt the car??? is that true??? plus hey have to verify any problem you complain about. For now I'll just live with the klunk only happened three times with my versa. i noticed while driving down the road the left side driver side has a little more vibration, can feel more bumps through the floorboard.

Does your car seems like it want to move to left or right while driving down the road??

Maybe it's a meniscus tear. My knee was clunking for a while until they did arthroscopic surgery.

Friends don't let friends drive with a klunk...

You ought to keep a log of all the students that drive your car and note every detail they do that could cause damage to the car. That may help out when you decide to replace that quickly aging V of yours!

This has been a problem from the start...............

Not consistent, can't replicate it. Happens most of the time during a right turn,

140 kms......... warranty is done at 160..........

That sucks that the latest repair didn't fix the problem. It wasn't until my fourth trip to the dealership that the steering column was replaced which definitely fixed the, clunk-when-turning-to-the-right noise on my V.

If my V was here, I would dig the paperwork out of the glovebox and tell you what the exact name of the part was that they replaced.

Don't let it get out of warranty before they get interested in diagnosing what the noise actually is.

Well...looks like most of us we'll have to live with the klunking.

Have you guys noticed if your versa is a little lower on the left side or right side while driving down the road before or after the klunk began???

It relates to Driving Instructor. We had a common compressor issue which you don't know about.

I posted on another thread today on this subject please search for it.

To make a long story short. It is the steering shaft link.

I had ALL of the same symptoms described here, took it to multiple dealers, had multiple parts replaced (this went on for months), and had the noise come back everytime until they replaced the steering shaft link.

It is a small shaft between the steering column and the steering rack with a universal joint on each end one of the u-joints was bad. That was what was making the noise.

I now have two other confirmations from others that this same repair fixed theirs as well.

WHO WAS THE DEALER THAT YOU DEALT WITH?????? MAYBE I CAN HAVE MINE CALL YOURS!!! CAN YOU SUPPLY ME WITH THIS INFORMATION PLEASE. I am still having the klunk and they don't want to do anything more for me......... they always give me a "complimentary" front end inspection but never find it.

Were you able to duplicate the noise????

Thank you ahead of time!

They ordered the new strut bearings for me. Maybe i'll have some results to post when the new bearings come in. I hope that it fixes it and it's not the steering shaft, they didn't even look at my car, just sent me home and ordered the parts.

The strut bearings might help, but if the clunk is still there have them check the subframe mounts. I have seen a couple issues with them were the rubber bushing has ripped free of the mount causing a rather bad noise in the front of the car by the pass floor board. Hope they will listen to at the dealer.
