I think it could be a little taller, but if you reduce it too much, you'll find yourself downshifting frequently into 5th when going up and down large hills at speeds under 60mph. You also can use 6th down ot almost 35mph if needed. If it was taller, you'd have to downshift more often in traffic.
I think Nissan&Renault decided to use only 1 gearset for this transmission and the ratios are the best comprimise for the torque curve, vehicle weight, and fact that is most other countries, you spend more time crusing at 45-60mph.
Raising 6th by about maybe 3% would probably be about right. That would give you a 100RPM drop at 70mph.
My Honda Accord had a 5 speed automatic. The 5th gear was nice and tall, but it's accelerated very poorly in top gear, and downshifted frequently under 70mph. But it alos got 33-35mpg at freeway speeds... better than my Versa. But it was a $24k car, so it's not fair to compare.
