last time i took it to the shop with the new engine he said he connected all the grounds that i didnt see or didnt connect

he also tryed communicating iwth the computer, but he couldnt because it was obd1

what im wondering is why a bad alternator would cause all these problems?

240sx OBDI ECUs are self diagnosing, just put it into that mode and count the blinks... then look up the code. It SHOULD be in your owners manual how to do that, but if it isn't, a NICO search should turn it up.

+1 on checking all your grounds. When a gauge gets grounded out, it will peg itself out. When your engine grounds get broken, or aren't making a good connection, you will get misfiring like you are talking about.

I highly doubt its your alternator. If it was, your car's battery would die after driving a while, and it wouldn't crank after it died.

Any luck? I've showed that video to a few of my car buddies (all of whom are more knowledgeable than I am) and none of them knew for sure. They all greed it could be a number of things but some of the main ideas were distributor, ignition coil and position sensor (im guessing they were referring to the CAS).

Let's take a look at your whole ignition system.

First off, replace...

CapRotorPlugsPlug Wires02 Sensor

Do a compression test while you have the plugs out.

Clean MAFClean the IACClean the Throttle Body and Throttle Plate

Check for Vacuum leaksCheck for any obvious damage to sensors and wiring. Check everything.

If you're still getting problems, check ECU codes. It's fairly easy.

If still no luck, might as well check out the fuel system.

Let us know from there.

Sounds like you're giving up on this car. I wouldn't this doesn't really sound like a big deal. It is most likely something having to do with the ignition system like sommmatt said. All those things he suggested are really easy to do and I'd suggest doing them before you give up and trade it. Start with the ignition stuff though.
