Well i'm planning out my build and I know there are a few different ignition upgrades, but lately I have been more interested in the ls7 coil upgrade that some of the RB guys have done.

I'm wondering about engine management compatibility with this coil setup. Is there a way to get this to work with a stock ecu with a simple rom tune to adjust dwell? My thinking is that it will work because it still is coil per cylinder. I am new to tunning, so the whole process is a little confusing to me.

Also, once I get comfortable with tunning, I was planning on running an SDS unit, so would these coils work with SDS? Or is SDS pretty particular about what kind of ignition system you use?

Thanks for any help everyone.

This thread may be of some help.It refers to Bosch coilpacks not LS1 packs but essentially it the same.

And to add to the topic..

Look for the bosch coils wiring diagram..

The bosch coilpacks are supposed to say hec716 and it is a microtech ignitor, but essentially the same wiring just different output colours..

Thanks for the replys guys. If I am reading correctly those bosh coils have to run an ignitor, and that is where they differ from the ls1 coils. Ls1 coils have an ignitor built in to each coil, and this is why I think I might have trouble. Can I get the ecu to control 4 individual ignitors?

People wire the Nissan ignitor to run LSx coils all the time. It is actually very easy. There are multiple write-ups for the SR, and wiring them up for the CA would be just as easy. Go for it.

I actually hear that the LS2 truck coils are the best. Much higher output than the LS1 coils.

I mean, we have a GM coil writeup right here in the CA forum!

http://www.nicoclub.com/archiv....html

And here is a writeup for a KA with LS1 coils

http://www.ka-t.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=26234

I saw someone do a really slick LS2 coil conversion last week, but I can't find where. I will see if I can find it.

Yes you are right r34gtr, the ls7 and ls2/ls2 truck coils are better than the ls1 coils, ls2 truck coils being the best of the three due to their high output and they have some nice heatsinking.

I will go look for the write up for the sr and get going on it. I think im just going to sell the stock coils to fund the lsx coils.

It might be a while, but would anyone be interested in a CA specific writeup?

Edit: Ls1<Ls2<Ls2 truck. The ls7 and ls1 coil might be the same.

Ok I did some more research and read more of those write ups and it makes sense now. I just have to wire the coils to the four imputs for the stock ignitor.

watch out for those bosch and early gm coil installs on oe nissan ecu. Majority reported they 'had issues', when the boost was cranked up. Switch back to oem coils was the only cure

Yep that would be a result of dwell settings (the time it takes for the coil to charge after discharge) it can be modified but I haven't had to modify it myself...

Checkout this write up I did.zer...-swap

Stock ecu, there are other guys running 400+ HP with stock dwell.but optimal setting would be 5ms

DO NOT RUN THE LSX COILS WITH THE IGNITOR. You will have a problem, they have their own ignitors.

I know not to use the ignitor, so no worries.

Also, I wanst ever planning on using the older gm coils or the bosh coils. I was just thinking of using lsx coils. I was just looking for what I needed to set dwell at and some clarification on the install. But thank you guys for all the imput, I appreciate it.

You use the oem gm lsx coil harness and splice it into your nissan harness.

Yes they sell the harnesses new but I think they are expensive.

The car too look for in the junkyard is anything with a ls1/ls2/ls7. There are alot of cars that have these engines so I wont list them all. But basically you just have to get lucky at the junkyard and find a car that hasnt had the engine pulled already. There are alot of them on ebay too.
