I'm thinking about doing that in the near future. I'm going to backup all of my DVD's on my HDD's so I can pack them up (no room for them and my 1 y/o tosses them all over the room.) With my current setup, I will need better DVD software and sound card...maybe vid card too. Both need to be 7.1 compatable and ideally HD ready. That way I wont have to upgrade yet again once I start viewing HD-DVD's and/or BRD's (Blue Ray Disks).

What kind of DVD player, DVD software, vid and sound card are you using?

How many DVD's were you planning to store on hard drives? You may need a lot of disk storage ... terabytes perhaps, if you have many movies!

Might be better to get a DVD changer player that can store multiple hundreds of disks ... I think they make those now (not just audio CD changers, that is)

Yeah, they do. They even have dual format HD-DVD/BRD with built in HDD's for audio, video and picture storage. The cost is quite high though. As for my DVD collection, I probably only have 50-70? Nothing a 500gb HDD couldn't handle.

Yes, that should be fine. Most normal DVD's have less than 10GB each - the wide-screen ones may be larger though ...

I have a few more DVD's though, so my options along these lines would be limited. I think one of those changers may be in the future for me ... and you right, they are a bit expensive right now, so I will wait.
