anyone remove their steering wheel?

Discussion of Infiniti's amazing (and underrated) sport-luxury crossovers, the EX35 and EX37. For 2014, the EX series will be renamed QX50, in line with Ininfiit's new naming conventions.

Like many of us, my steering wheel bezel is all jacked up with scratches and chips. It just looks like cheap crap compared to the rest of the car.... so I am buying myself a new bezel and going to try wrapping it with the carbon fiber look.. That will cost me just about $35. :naughty:

Although fairly technically inclined, I am not super jazzed about taking the steering wheel off and having to mess with the springs and mostly the airbag assy. But I am getting ridiculous quotes to R&R the steering wheel at a couple different steelerships... $175-$225. I would be willing to pay $75-$100 or so just to not have to worry about it....BUT if it is a lot easier than I think it is, I would go for it myself.

Anyone do this? I know it will look great when it is done. :dblthumb:

Found a shop to do it for less than $100 so I bought the bezel today and some better carbon fiber wrap...
I will be wrapping the new one hopefully in a week or two and then also wrap my old piece and sell it to some lucky recipient that wants to resolve their scratched up steering wheel as much as I do.

getting mine installed today. Very jazzed up about finally having it done!

With wheat, you might want to try one of these non-black colors. It would look nice.

I think I saw a post about an applique with adhesive that could be installed without removal of the steering wheel. Does anyone know where to buy that? Also, painting plasti-dip rubber coating can repair scratches.

OK - I didn't use any of that 3M primer94 stuff. My bezel looked fine...until I put it in my car for a few hours when it was over 100 degrees outside. the little corners started to lift and the tight parts I really had to stretch started to wrinkle... so I ordered that primer and a supposed 'upgrade' of the 3M vinyl. This was the 3M scotchprint 1080 carbon fiber. From what I read, THIS is the shizzle....so maybe it was a good thing I need to re-do it. Only downside is having to wait another 5 days or so.

Received the primer and the 3M Scotchprint yesterday. Kinda glad the first stuff didn't stay down because the Scotchprint stuff is has a definite 3D / layered look to it. Good stuff. Hope it goes on as easy as they say.

Other than the airbag light (see other post) this went fairly smooth. Removing the steering wheel was much easier than I thought it would be. The wrap looks great. Now I have an extra bezel to wrap!
Pics soon

I want to replace mine too.. Did you end up paying someone to do it? Where did you purchase the parts?

I bought the part on ebay, removed the wheel and wrapped the bezel myself.
I still have my spare bezel and would wrap that and sell it if anyone is interested...

Oh cool. For how much? Where did you find instructions on removing the wheel? Thank you!! :)
(Sorry for all the questions but I'm barely a two-month owner of a used EX35 & can't really find a lot of information online on replacing worn parts)

There is a link on the first reply above.

How much would a pre-wrapped bezel be worth to you?? :)

Well, I can buy a new non-wrapped bezel for $26 on ebay. Yours is used and wrapped so I dunno, you tell me. I want to save as much as I can ..

Try it yourself. ...
Don't forget the price of the wrap and the couple hrs to wrap it.... And then your 2nd attempt to get it right.
