I was searching for a new Shift knob (I know there is a sticky with several), but options are still very limited. SO .... I saw that alot of people with RL just remove it. Apparently it easy to do and would allow you to use any shift know you want including Nismo ones which would be nice. Also, anyone know what the Thread pitch is on our shifter?

My GF will soon ride my car so I'm keeping that reverse lockout. I don't want her to destroy my clutch by mistake

I think the thread is 10 x 1.25

I guess I also don't understand why you can't use any shift knob? The lift up piece is not on the shift knob, so I am at a loss !!

once you remove the reverse lockout do you have to do anything put in reverse or just move to the far left?

Could we also pressure a company into making short throw shifters for our car, LOL?

As far as I know you just move to the far left and up. Try searching, I found that people with the Ford Focus, Mercury Cougar and STi have been removing theirs. Just curious, it would give us move shift knob options.

So you still have to pull up on the shifter to move it into the reverse position?

Well I finally got rid of the reverse lockout and cut the shaft down a inch while I was at it. Came out really nice.

Racingline already has a STS kit out for our car, what a difference with it.

Just drops the shifter itself down so it doesnt feel like your driving a dump truck anymore. Thats all. The racingline sts affects the amount of throw but nothing has addressed the height of the shift knob itself which some of us want a solution for.

Here are some pics of the finished product. This was after everything was cut down, shifter was removed and modified and I welded everything back together and then reinstalled everything and replaced my shift boot with one I had from a 93 Maxima. Came out really good and I couldnt be happier with the height and throw. My own custom version of a Altima Coupe short throw shifter. Compare the previous pictures with the new pictures and you can tell how much it dropped down.

whoa, thats the way it should be! i personally dont mind the oem shift's height, but looks great.

i noticed you didnt use the same shiftknob. it didnt fit due the cutting/welding?

so to accomplish this, all thats needed is a replacement of oem shift boot with a maxima's shift boot after cutting and welding?

Yea I am very happy with it. I didnt use the 350z shift knob just because it felt so much better and lower with the oem shift knob. I didnt like the oem shift knob when everything else was stock, but now that its down and reverse lockout is gone, I like it again. The other shift knob will still fit, just wasnt feeling it as much. If someone is interested I will sell the aluminum one. I just used a maxima shift boot because its pretty close to the same size fitment on bottom but alot shorter so it worked out well. I know redline goods has those shift boots you can order but they cost 50-70 dollars. I only paid 18 dollars for this maxima shift boot off ebay so it saved me money and I like the way it came out. I wouldnt mind messing around with finding a different shift knob but I want something that will sit low like the oem one and has a heavy weight to it. Right now I just have a small adjustment to make to where the cable connects to the shaft and it'll be perfect for me. Plus when it was out I painted and regreased everything so it looks like it could be oem and shifting is easier from replacing the grease in the pivot ball. The only thing really needed to do this is patience, pulling out the entire center console, taking the shifter assembly apart and releasing the shift cables. Then just measure, cut, and weld how low you want it to be. Find a shift boot you will be happy with. All in all I finished the entire project over a saturday and put everything back together on sunday morning.
