True story here. Mitsu’s are rugged cars, very rugged.Several years ago I had a 5 liter, with a few mods. I was part of a large crowd that assembled Sat nights and eventually headed out to do some racing on a dead end street.(typically at 1AM when there was little or no traffic out) We only ran one direction, and drove slowly back the other way. At the starting end was another road that ran perpendicular to the road we used. That road was 4 lanes wide. It had a 4 or 5 foot steeply angled bank on the far side. About 5 feet past the bank was a 6 foot high chain link fence. A guy showed up with a turbo Mitsu that had been modified by HKS for more go. The owner was determined to beat the 5.0s In his first race, he ran a 5 liter and lost. He got pissed and hit it hard coming back to the starting line – an absolute no no. He forgot to stop. He hit the bank at probably 80-100 mph and launched. He cleared the fence by several feet and continued his flight, headlights pointing to the night sky. About 40-50 feet into the field he made a loud “thud” as he landed. There was not a square inch of that car that wasn’t dented, bent, twisted, smashed and crashed. We all rushed the fence, (the area he landed in was complete fences in) and ran to the car to find the driver struggling to get out. The car was an obviously a total wreck, all 4 tires bend 90 degrees like the Delorean in back to the future. He, on the other hand, had a bloody nose and was a little disoriented. Don’t know if he went to the hospital or not. From that day on, Mitsu’s are referred to as “Land Darts” around here, but they are definitely exceptionally strong cars. Exceptionally strong. If you don’t fly them they will probably last a long time.
