Fag, Fag-end. The modern slang for a cigarette and for the stub of a cigarette, respectively. The origin, which seems to have left so many etymologists in doubt, is perfectly simple. It was born in the cloth-weaving in. dustry. Fag or fag-end was the name given to the selvedge, or coarse end, of a piece of cloth. It thus came to mean the end of anything. Thus, fagend of a cigarette means the stub. The custom of calling a cigarette a "fag" arose from small boys, at first in the weaving towns, calling to smokers: "Chuck us the fag, guv'nor," using the word they knew for "end." f*****. Can be either a bundle of sticks, or a savoury made from the offals of pigs seasoned with sage, onions and other herbs, and fried or baked in tins. f***** votes are those obtained by transfer of property, temporarily, to a person whose already owned-property is not sufficient to qualify him for a vote. The "f*****" was a "bundle" of property divided into small lots for the purpose given above.
