Ok guys, I've heard this term alot but never really understood it. So why do they call taking a puff from a cigarette a "drag"? I mean it feels good, why call it a drag?

Probably for the same reason that you should offer hitchhikers in Britain a "lift" and not a "ride". Particularly the women! :)

The word fag has something to do with bunches of sticks. I think its a camping term that took on a new meaning?

I always thought the reference to homosexuals being called faggots were because of the bundles of sticks. I'm not totally sure if I'm getting the origin of the word right, but if I remember it was something about the witch hunt in Europe. Where homosexuals were also hunted to put into human faggots (bundles to burn like a real f***** aka a bundle of sticks) to be burned when they ran out of sticks to keep the fire going for the witches. The reference to the word "f*****" then became a way to keep homosexuals in the closet and intimidate. For those who say humans can't keep a fire going, yeah look at what the Nazi's did with the Jews in concentration camps. After getting the initial fire going to burn the first group, the second batch would get the melted fats poured over them so they'd burn better. Pretty disgusting if you ask me.

I'm not opposed to enjoying a high-quality cigar maybe once every year or two. I quit smoking years ago however. Cigarettes and cheap cigars are just nasty.

Fag, Fag-end. The modern slang for a cigarette and for the stub of a cigarette, respectively. The origin, which seems to have left so many etymologists in doubt, is perfectly simple. It was born in the cloth-weaving in. dustry. Fag or fag-end was the name given to the selvedge, or coarse end, of a piece of cloth. It thus came to mean the end of anything. Thus, fagend of a cigarette means the stub. The custom of calling a cigarette a "fag" arose from small boys, at first in the weaving towns, calling to smokers: "Chuck us the fag, guv'nor," using the word they knew for "end." f*****. Can be either a bundle of sticks, or a savoury made from the offals of pigs seasoned with sage, onions and other herbs, and fried or baked in tins. f***** votes are those obtained by transfer of property, temporarily, to a person whose already owned-property is not sufficient to qualify him for a vote. The "f*****" was a "bundle" of property divided into small lots for the purpose given above.

I think it's because hit was already being used on marijuana.

Drag- Cigarette (or fag or square or joe)Hit - Marijuana (or weed or chronic or dro)

Maybe we should commission a new saying. Something like, "Excuse me miss, let me get a lick o dat...square."

Maybe not.
