Can anyone teach me basic phrases/words? The girl I may be potentially going out with likes Japanese and she was wondering if I speak any. I told her know, but I said I'd try and learn.

First things first learn english, then atleast you already have something in common.....assuming she can read/write and speak english.

Second step is watch lots....lots of anime.Once you are done with a couple GBs worth, youll be able to speak basic phrases pretty easily.

Want to learn to read basic japanese?....read lots....lots of manga.Get Raws and compare with Scanlations. You'll be picking out Kanji in no time.

I've used Rosetta Stone demo stations...the software is actually really good. Well worth looking into if you're interested in learning another language.

Just like high school English: it's time to study parts of speech and grammar. If you really want to learn to converse fluently in a langauge and not just fumble around with memorized ideas and phrases, you need to understand the basic principles of the language you're speaking. Rosetta stone is a good start, as it actually teaches USE of the language rather than memorization, but you'll be at a distinct advantage if you understand the mechanics of what it's teaching you.

Might also consider learning Italian or Spanish first. Both of these will give you a linguistic background that'll help in learning future languages. And both are relatively easy languages to learn, being latin-based and relatively strict in rules.

It doesn't. But learning any language helps you understand HOW TO LEARN another language. And since Japanese is commonly regarded as one of the more difficult yo learn languages, learning an easy language (like those derived from latin) beforehand can decrease the learning curve. Neo-latin languages are a good jumping off point for English speakers because they're different, yet also similar. Because English is Germanic but has adopted many latin traits, there's a degree of familiarity but also a lot of new material. That makes it easy to pick up while still illustrating the differences, which is the understanding needed to easily learn more languages.
