well doing that is illegal. but if you dont plan on selling the car, take the odo assembly apart, and what i do is attach the plastic wheel and pin to a cordless drill. then just spin the plastic wheel until you reach whatever mileage.

do this at your own risk. and if you do sell it you better make damn sure you remember the right mileage.

well its hard to say since some people do it all the time. ive found that some odometers have a tamper proof lock on them (so it can only roll forward). i noticed the JDM clusters dont have that though. i wish i knew just as much as you though.

not sure if s13 is the same but on my s14 i removed the speedo, then you will see a series of gears (one for each odo number) held in place by a metal pin. Carefully slide the pin out in either directoin trying to keep the gears on it, just enough so that you can lift one end of the pin so that the gears are no longer in contact with the wheels the numbers are printed on, then just simply roll each number to the desired position and replace the pin with the gears. I did this to match my actual milage to that of the SE cluster I installed in my base s14. DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK!! rolling back the milage of your car is illegal!

hmm, and i thought my KA with 12,000K on it was legit, even though the sticker on the windshield says 150,00K

Well, if you keep rolling foward it eventually resets itself after like 399,999 miles or so ( something like that). Anyway, a good way to check is to make sure the seller has his previous title or last registration with him at the time as well. One of the first cars I almost bought was advertised as having 60k miles on it........the title when registered said it had 147k.

I agree with you.....Everyone knows how hard it is to deal with the DMV on other issues. It's gonna be a b**ch trying to explain why the mileage on the title is less than the previous title. You might want to take the day off of work for that one because they will definitely won't "let you slide" on mileage tampering.

By the way..the original poster should read the following:

While criminal sanctions are usually appropriate for fraudulent behavior of the sort involved in odometer fraud, civil remedies are available for use in appropriate cases. Civil penalties of up to $100,000 for a related series of violations are authorized. The Secretary of Transportation can impose the penalties, which are collected by the Department of Justice. 49 U.S.C. § 32709(a).
