In my personal experience I never had a "good" (read - pricey) go bad while I was using it. So, it never occured to me to repair/rebuild the speaker, rather than replace it. IIRC, I never had a speaker go bad, but if I had, I woiuld have most likely replaced it, so the new one would have a warrantee. I understand you got these for nothing and if you can have them replaced cheaply, you'll have a good speaker for just the cost of repairs. My suggestion would be to check with a Mom & Pop type stereo (Home Audio??) shop. They may do repairs or have someone that does for them. They may also be able to test/diagnose the problem as well. Most bigger/chain places are going to want to simply sell you a new speaker.
Good Luck.
