Ok, so over this weekend I'm supposed to find a book for an Eglish III book report. I'm a junior in high school btw. I was just curious if any of you guys had a favorite book or something. I've always loved Douglas Adams' Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy...

So any fav's?

I'm really in to the Song of Ice and Fire books (three so far)by George R. R. Martin. It's fantasy stuff, but very gritty. Nobody has "plot immunity"...major characters croak and it almost knocks you out of your seat.

Any books by Neal Gaiman are good.

I also just read "Last Call" by Tim Powers. It's set in current day Las Vegas mostly, and mixes p0ker, tarot and magic in a really interesting way.

I like the idea of the "Song of Ice and Fire." Never hear of it, but I'm all for the fantasy stuff. Loved the Chronicles of Narnia as a kid...

The books are HUGE, but I really like them. I think the first three books are close to 3000 pages combined.

There isn't a lot of magic and traditional fantasy stuff. It's got lots of intrigue, political stuff, war and tons of cool characters (who sometimes die unexpectedly).

Check out the reviews for "Game of Thrones" on Amazon.

I can't count the number of times I've read the Hobbit.

You need to read The Lord of the Rings. Classic literature, easy to read, and better than listening to those damn innaccurate movies. You'll be surprised how much in your future will reference it and how much it'll help you in your english classes. It's also better than that "pseudo-fantasy" crap, everyone who's anyone knows that Tolkien created the genre and no one will ever top his genius.

Way ahead of you. :) Along with reading the Hobbit a good six times, I of course read the full ring trilogy another two times...

If you want something that you can really get into, like Tinted said, Clancy.

My personal favorite is Without Remorse, or Executive Orders. Red Strom Rising, Rainbow Six, The Bear and the Dragon, The Hunt For Red October are all great. Red Rabbit just came out in paper back, but I dont know how good it is.

I never finished Debt of Honor, Sum of All Fears, or the Cardinal of the Cremlin. But they all were pretty good what I did read.

Also, if you are an X Box fan, Halo The Fall of Reach, was good.

I was gonna say anything by Richard Marcinko, because he uses funny and different profanity, he's a sailor technically speaking so he can get away with it.

Also, if your into this kinda stuff, you also get tactical tidbits in case you wind up in a gunfight or something of the sort, could come in handy...

Comic books such as the Avengers and the JSA, both written by Geoff Johns, or anything by him for that matter, assuming comics are your bag, but hell, if you like sci fi, I'd say give them a try.

If someone calls you a dork for reading them, just remind them that emo chicks are hot.

edit: I should've read all the text...tell your english teacher that the highly reviewed movie American Splendor was based on a comic book if they feel they're not a form of literature.

Remember kids, Doctor Doom pwns you all!

Three books so far:

1) Game of Thrones2) Clash of Kings3) Storm of Swords

Three more to go, including "A Feast for Crows", which is being written right now.

Unlike Robert Jordan's stuff, Martin claims that the story *will* end at book 6 and won't be milked for 15 more books.

Like the thought of that Richard Marcinko guy, always loved humorous books. But about the comic books, I highly doubt my teach would let me read them. The only comic book that a teach ever allowed was Maus. Ever heard of it? It's about the holocaust and is a really good two-book series... Speaking of comic books, I happen to own the Vol 1 / Issue 1 of Macross (eng. adaptation) made by Comico in 1984. Know of its worth?

Tom Clancy books are great! Just finished his latest, called The Teeth of the Tiger. I think it's the shortest fiction book he's done, but it was still an excellent read. I've been reading/following his work since '95 or so. By far my favorite author.

Don't know exactly when it came out...spotted it at the front & center table at Borders and couldn't pass it up!!

It's basically a VERY modern take on anti-terrorism. Taking the fight to the enemy on their own turf, and using communication technology, and medical technology to fight the enemy without being suspected. In this one they go after the money of the terror outfits.... and it sounds like there'll be another book to follow this one very soon.

We're back in the future now, where Ryan Sr. is a former president, and isn't heard from(except once, briefly). Jack Ryan, Jr. is a very large part of the storyline..he's entered the spook business(without mom & dad's knowledge or approval) and takes on his first assignment...

All in all, a very good and up to date story. I usually read books slowly, only maybe a chapter a night....trying to absorb the information and catch every nuance....but this one I couldn't put down. It's only 431 pages and I burned through it in what seemed like 3 nights. Caution! read slowly! The story really picks up quickly, and moves along at bullet train pace!

Anything by Stephen Hunter kicks *** Go out and read 'Point of Impact' and you'll be sucked in and have to do the whole series. , Tom Clancy is great (although a bit long winded unless your in his earlier books). Flight of The Intruder by Stephen Coonts is one of my alltime favorites. If you just want lots of action and swearing Rogue Warrior is a pretty good book (written by a navy seal, and let me tell you he cusses like a sailor). Only problem with his books is that they arn't really accurate (at least not to the level clancy is) He's a bit 'overdramatic' but it's fun.

Well, my Mom's giving me 5 bucks to read The Stranger by Albert Camus. ;) Good thing is that it's fairly short, and she says it's pretty good. Plus the five bucks works for me. Anyone here ever read it?

It's very good. A classic work on the philosophical view of existentialism. If you like it, read something by Sartre.

The Art of War owns, I try to apply some of the philosophy to daily life, for ex.

I appear to be a jackass, little do they know, I'm a lecherous jackass hatching a scheme to get into there pants.

this regards women who look at me and laugh

I hear that book is good for giving insight on planning battle strategy too
