Anyone honed some cylinders lately?

Serious question:

Who has honed their block before? I have to do this soon after i get my pistons out of the block and have no clue whats going on with it. Im guessing I have to size the honer correctly and get a drill or some such thing to mount the sucker to, right? Sorry if its a repeated question.

I just paid to have it done. Its cheaper than buying the correct honing stones. I paid $20 ($5 per cylinder).

Yea, I bought the stuff to try and do it on my own, but one of my clynders was scored badly enough that honing wasn't going to fix it. The biggest thing is to get a good crosshatch pattern. Don't mess with the ones with the honing "stones" on it, get a good ball hone. Also, take out the oil squirters at the bottom of the block, they make it a pain. Other than that you need a good CORDED drill (you'll run the battery dead on a cordless before you get through the first cylnder), and a lot of arm endurance!

I personally use the stones and I hone all of my engines. The stones aren't bad and actually they are good if you have minor scoring, granted you keep gauging your ring end gaps to make sure you're not shaving too much cylinder. The key to using the stones is strong enough drill, your ability to stay consistent with arm motion up and down, and of course an ample can of wd40. It's not hard at all as long as your cylinders aren't grooved. But as float says, you want a good cross hatch pattern.

So one size fits all for honers, eh?

Does anybody have a picture from a corky bell handbook or something so I know what to shoot for when we are talking good cross-hatch?

Also, how long should I spend on each cylinder? Is it dependant on how well the pattern is developed?

I am so helpless...

Seriously...my advice would be to find the nearest shop that does a plateau hone. Then you can beat the **** out of the car right out of the box. No break-in required.

What's a plateau hone? And how does it differ from a home brewed hone?

Facinating. Just facinating.

Any idea what a job like this goes for?

The shop that did my motor originally charged the same amount. There really isn't much more to it. Maybe an extra 20mins of work or so. I would venture to say $50. Don't quote me on that though.
