So I stumbled upon this yesterday when looking for paintless dent removal shops...

http://www.sodaworks.com/

It looks like a nice alternative to sand blasting especially for delicate surfaces...

Does anyone have any experience with this?

I've heard of it, and I might have even done it once, but I can't quite remember. For some reason I'm thinking that it worked well. Whatcha blastin big guy?

well this summer I'd like to paint my car, and I have a couple areas that need sand blasted due to rust.. I just stumbled upon this, since I was thinking about buying a sand blaster (I have other uses for it around the marina).. but this might be a nice alternative..

Wes there's a ton of different types of media blasting, soda, glass bead, shell's .... all have their own particular application.
Soda is great on thinner metal such as auto body. Less stress distortion and heat distortion on the metal.

Are those areas mostly seams?

Broadfield used a Speedblaster, which looks like it's perfect for (or made for) blasting seams.

And apparently if you keep it pressed against the metal, it sucks the media back in.

Used it to finish up two rusted Austin Healeys after sandblasting. Preserves the metal quite well and a hell of a lot easier to clean up than sand.

Apparently in Japanese soda blasting is called nyuki nyuki.

Very interesting. Thanks for the info :). I wonder if the soda machines can use other media if something more abrasive is needed.

I've heard of "soda blasting" in 3 different contexts

1. dropping mentos tablets into a full 2 liter diet coke bottles. My son's done it with 7 in one shot, with a small drilled hole in the bottlecap. Watched a 50' geyser, very cool, very messy if you're too close.

2. the loud gaseous emissions people make after drinking large amounts of carbonated beverages, while describing Nala's sex life.

3. paint stripping/refinishing with baking soda with air pressure. If your intention is to use it for stripping a car's finish, you might want to double check with the paint manufacturer you plan to use to repaint. Not all recommend it.

I wonder if the mid westerners call it pop blasting, and these crazy southern bastads call it coke blasting.

Clearly "soda" blasting is the correct answer, but these stubborn people just don't get it!

Pretty sure that one carries a different, laxative oriented connotation.

i read that sodablasting could be used on cam and such to work harden the surface while not deforming the lobes, also that the microscopic divets that are left hold oil better than unpeened lobes.
makes sense.

Wes - You betcha.. I had to clean up the battery box area.. I don't need to tell you about what happens under the freaking battery box.. :bigthumb:

Initially I used soda from Harbor Freight.

Bought a little unit like the following for $20 from Harbor Freight and rented a kick azz gas powered compressor for the weekend for under $50..

As I recall, I found the best deal on (black diamond) media at place named Tractor Supply (TSC) as it is used to clean up rusty equipment.

http://www.harborfreight.com/portable-a ... 37025.html

The only down side to the black diamond media is takes forever to get it out of cracks and crevices.. If the soda media disolves with water, then it is worth the extra cost.
