I also need a tech tip on how to insert those pesky music wire springs that are attached to the inner and outer pads. Do they even do anything? What happens if they are left out?

Leave 'em out. They prevent pad rattle, but as long as you've got anti-squeal and shims on the back it shouldn't matter. I always throw 'em out myself.

first of all i hate to dig up old threads but this is just plain wrong....

those springs assist the calipers square cut seal in RETRACTING your pads away from the rotor. if left off you will eventually if not right away run into problems with your calipers sticking and brakes over heating and wearing prematurely. the ANTI RATTLE CLIPS installed on the caliper bracket are what help reduce pad vibration (brake squeal).

and btw stop squeal is awesome on semi metallic pads but will make ceramic pads squeal even worse

I used the spring clips, but they only attached to one side of the new pads. So I didn't attach them to either side, and just used them as a shim. I have not had any problems whatsoever.

Uh, they don't do a damned thing. Hell, lots of cars don't even come with them from the factory. You don't need them. I'm looking at the 300ZX calipers I have in my closet next to the Wilwoods and neither of them have it.

Anti-squeal goes on the backplate of the pad facing the piston, it doesn't matter what the pad compound is.
