Very common. You can wirebrush the big junk off, then get a chemical treatment for the rest of the rusty metal. Once it is clean, put a good paint on it.To reduce the chances of it coming back, keep your battery clean and make sure the plastic tray isn't holding excess water when it rains or you wash your car.

mine isn't a plastic tray. Its metal for some reason. Its a bloody mess. I bought some rust remover chemicals and primer-paint. Hopfully that will get rid of that crap and not infest my car

Take the metal tray out and relocate to the trunk You'll either have to drill the spot welds out or use a pry bar. Those trays are worthless.

Is your battery leaking, eating away on the rust inhibitor coat? Just take a lil taste test. A very lil taste, I had a burn for a bit.
