Anyone had problems with KA24DE crank oil seals?

Information on the naturally-aspirated KA24E and KA24DE engines.

I have a '91 HB with maybe 130K miles on it. I say maybe because the odometer has not worked for the last 2 years, and was malfunctioning for who knows how long before I bought the car. I have replaced/adjusted the valave shims and the head seems to be in great shape (very clean). I also replaced the crank to conecting rod bearings as one of them had cracked in two and was making some noise (the other three had not cracked yet). Again the bottom end seemed very clean. I reassembled the engine and everything ran great, no leaks, no oil burnt or used in any way. All of the sudden last month I start seeing drips on the ground. First one from the oil pan, then later from the bell housing lip and the transmission drain plug. Now I have oil drops forming from a half dozen places on the underside of the engine. The oil pan to engine block seal looks good, which brings me back to my question: Has anyone had their front or rear oil seals go out ?

Hello,

From my understanding crank seal failure is not uncommon. I personally replaced my front crank seal THREE times but two of those were my fault because I didn't seat them properly. In any case, yeah the front crank seal was worn and leaky and it allowed quite a bit of oil to drain out!

You sound competent so just replace that bad boy during a long lunch! The front crank seal is $8.70 from my local Nissan parts department, unfortunately supplies are usually limited as I found out on my third trip down there!

Good luck!

Thanks for the info. Looks like I'm going to the nissan parts counter tomorrow.

Mine went out around 105,000 on my 95 SE.

It was fine 1 day, started to drip for about a week, and then gushed after that.

I didn't have time to do it myself, and a local shop charged $150 to fix it.

I had a fun experience with that as well. My front seal went out, leaked oil all over the fan, which then deposited the oil to every possible surface in the whole engine bay My hood liner is still soaked with oil, and you should have seen the stains it left on the floor, it looked like a rain shower of oil spots
