I'm at my friends house so I could "borrow" his cable modem to download all the xp updates since I just reinstalled it. but I can't get it to connect. I've got the NIC installed and all, and it works. I've got it plugged into his router. it will connect and all but just won't transmit anything over the connection.

anybody got any ideas?

got all your TCP/IP settings set up correctly? how about your gateway and DNS entries? just copy the numbers from your friend's setup.

how is the router set up? is it set to DHCP or you have to manually assign an ip address?

Check on his Mac to see if he's got a static-IP (which he most likely has with a cable modem) or an auto-assigned an IP using DHCP.

If he has static-IP, copy the IP, DNS, Gateway, and anything else of importance and put it straight into your XP Network properties for the NIC.

If he has DHCP, you will most likely need software to connect right as it's not "always on". (My DSL has PPPoE which means it takes like 2 seconds to connect whenever I want internet)

DHCP should be automatically recongized and configured through windoze XP....I dunno what you're talking about not always on, my cable connection is always on and I'm using DHCP. Did you check the physical hardware (meaning is your network card still good, did you bend/break the wires)

Tell me that you don't have both of your computers hooked up to the same cable modem with a hub or a switch without a router.

If you have it set up like that, only one will get on. Most cable companies only release one IP per customer, so you need a router and NAT to use more than one computer.

As much as you clown XP,

Windows XP Pro is the -only- version of windows that I would recommend (or have recommended) for HOME USE. [The others were all, "well, if you _have_ to"].

Of course all the available updates should be installed and you should still know your OS and it's capabilities and limits so you can make the most of it.

(Most problems I have seen are dumbass users installing a million dumbass programs--it's YOUR system, take care of it)

yeah, xp home update only cost me $99, and I new I would regret it as soon as I got it. now it's biting me in the ***.

I had formated the hard drive, and reinstalled every thing clean 'cause my brothers had kept installing every damn game we had. and they would ***** when games would crash all the time.clean install of win98, then the xp update.I need to go get a full version of pro... but it's like $80 billion if memory serves.

my friend told me to get a mac. I hit him in the face with one of my old tension rods. (got new rods w/ bushings today, OE replacement.)

not really. (the hitting part)

I have to nuke my harddrive soon... I've been meaning to for a while cause IE is completely f-ed over (yes, I've tried reinstalling it) as well as most other programs, including some of the stupid system junk. Winamp, however, is always reliable... WinXP is cool when it works...

its your cable line, you cant just plug anothers modem in.. it runs at a high freqency (sp?) and most lines need to be re-run and/or have the power boosted on the line.. thats why they come out to install it when u order the servace.. unlike DSL where they just send everything out in a box and u set it up.. so the only way your gonna get it to work is have the cable ppl come out and set it up for u.

Master, you're crazy. :P~That's what a lil 'ol "cable modem" does.

It MOdulates and DEModulates the cable signal. Converts it if you will. Think of a telephone (it's all in chaging the medium...). Voice - [air waves] - Microphone - [electricity] - Speaker - [airwaves] - Ear.

If it's any good it will be a bridge to Ethernet and, quite possibly, have a built-in router/NAT/"firewall"/whatever. Unfortunately, many have a lame-*** USB interface (which I _guess_ is good if you only have one computer that has USB and doesn't have a NIC... oh, just kidding. It sucks.).

If you _do_ have an IP conflict in XP you'll get a stupid pop-up message and then the IP will be reset to 0.0.0.0. Same happens in 2k but it lacks a nifty "repair" ("try-the-IP-again") function. It's really fun to use a more agressive OS on the same network as Windows XP/2K and have it beat them into submission...

*I say "firewall" in quotes because most "firewall" routers are simply basing their "firewall"ness on NAT routers being stupid (well, not really--this should be the case unless otherwise defined :-) as to where to send an unestablished/related in-bound packets [thereby dropping them].

In regards to that, install this update and it will fix it.

i guess ill put in some input. xp does have a built in firewall so that could be the problem. i used to do dsl tech support over the phone, not the same at all, but the same concept. also if your running norton or anything like that try shutting it off then try again. also i could swear that if you made a new internet connection on xp dont you need to make a new connection profile???????

eh, dont' worry about it anymore, the computer that didn't work on the cable is at my house on dial up. working fine. except for the error message which turned out to be a virus it seems.

the cable modem setup went:roadrunner cable modem-->dell wireless broadband router w/4port switch. from there it went to my computer, his mac, my other computer, and an addtron 8 port switch w/ uplink port (the addtron fed the other rooms in the house)

I figured xp would notice any IP address conflicts and fix itself.

the computer that does connect to the internet over the cable modem is just an install of xp just like the other computer. except it works.

If u are still having problems with that "rpc" error there are 2 threads in the 240sx general section that cover what that virus is and how to fix it.
