has anyone ever took the carpet off the back hatch and cut away some of the metal bracing? The reason i wanted to do it was so i could get at the holes from the rear wing better and cover them up so they can't be pushed through. I just wanted to make sure before i do it that i wont mess up the "structural integrity" of the hole rear hatch. of course i will leave it so i can reattach the carpet and make it look like nothing has been done.

Replace the rear glass with a light-weight see-through plastic compund...really? I don't know that was just an Idea.

Most people do it for looks. You are not saving much weight with a lightweight hatch. Now if you were to take it off thats a different story

ok i picked a bad title my question was not how much weight could be saved by chopping up my rear hatch. The question was weather or not i could cut some of the bracing away so i could put a piece of metal behind the rusted holes that my spoiler left. This way it will give strength to the bondo so it cant be pushed through.

yeah, that sounds like a good idea, structural integrity is overrated anyways.

you can drill holes in your framerails to kill some weight too you know.

I tried twice to patch the big rusted holes left from that stupid foam factory spoiler. I pop-riveted metal in there and then filled it up with bondo and painted the whole thing. It lasted maybe 6-8 months each of the times I did it. It looked good at first, and then one winter and it was toast. I got lucky and found a perfect hatch at a junk yard on a $35 for "all you can carry" day. I put that hatch up on my back and carried it right out of there for $35. Your best bet would be to find a new deck without a spoiler (that foam thing ways a ton anyway).

I used bondo on my holes too, but i backed it with aluminum sheeting JBwelded to the underside of the trunklid. Works good for now... NE240sx, what happened to your "fix"?

If you want to lighten your hatch I'm almost positive underground (or one of our other sponsors) has a cf hatch. Match that up with a lexan rear windshield and you're good.
