Anyone ever see a service body on a 720? It even had dual rear wheels! It was parked next to this 1974 Datson 620 at my local salvage yard. I wonder if these little trucks really came with service bodies from the factory or if it was added later. These trucks just don't have a lot of extra power for that kinda weight!

Thought you might enjoy the photos. :chuckle:

My factory service manual notates that they did sell cab-only no-bed models so that coachbuilders could make things like this, just like the big boys!

There WAS a factory one ton 720 with a dually rear end.

I might pull the transmission out of that service truck.

My dad had a flat bed 1ton with duallies. It came without a bed. It was a work horse. They ran it for several years hauling metal and whatnot for his machine shop. Never once heard him complain about it.

Did it have a heavy duty transmission? I want to pull the transmission from this truck and use it on mine. If the transmission is the same as all the other 5speed MT then I may not be in any big hurry.

I'm pretty sure the only differences were that the heavy duty truck had beefier leafsprings and the same low differential gearing that the 4wd trucks had instead of the higher gearing that the 2wd trucks had.

Those were common.

I drove one with an A-frame utility bed when I worked a summer job at a glass / window factory.

So, let me ask a stupid question, since I would rather sound dumb than misunderstand something and mess things up.

It sounds like the trannys on these trucks are all the same, BUT the rear end DIFFERENTIAL differs based on the model, 2WD, 4WD, 1 ton etc. Right? So if I get the transmission out of the truck at the salvage yard, it should be exactly the same. Right?

Right now, my 5th gear is missing a tooth, so I only run 4 gears. Even without 5th gear, I get 22mpg no matter how I drive. I have oversized tires, and so I get 10% more speed from each gear than if I was running the stock 14 inch. The oversized tires haven't improved my gas mileage though.

According to my books, yes, that is correct.

If its original 720 it would work, that is its the same. I run a dogleg box from a cifero in mine. a direct bolt on but the gearbox leans a little with the Z engine.

None shipped from the factory with bodies on them, cabs only. I owned one for a year. It got unbelievable fuel mileage and was a polar bear in the snow.
