The black plastic handle broke off of my hood release cable. So now I either use my bare hands or a pair of pliers to release the hood. I ordered a new cable and hadn't put much thought into replacing the old one, and just from 3 minutes of looking around it might be quite the undertaking for such a small thing. Was wondering if anyone in here has had to do that before, and the level of difficulty in replacing it.

In advance, thanks guys

I think you are the first I can recall.

Please do document it for us if you would be so kind. I am sure you will not be the last.

And as a heads-up, when you check your trunk lid, I don't think you will see the letter "y" there.

Its not painfully hard, when I was taking apart my part car I noticed after bending the fender to hell with my bare hands (Because I broke the camera on my phone taking the car apart) that the hood release is routed from a gromet in the interior thought the inside of the left (Drivers) side fender and on top of the front bumper.

So all you have to do is remove the lower lower fuse panel/vent/foot well light cover and then remove the fender and then just route the cable.

For the first time the FSM (Service Manual) Does'nt list how to replace this.

Luckily for you Nissan FAST (Dealership program that the Parts people use to order parts) does:

And lucky for you I am installing 94 Q tweeters in my 93 so I had to take off the piece that holds the hood release handle in place so I will take a picture of it and where the wire is routed though in the interior.

I would be happy to do my best to contribute to this site by documenting the replacement of the hood release cable. I'll try to be specific and take several photos and I'll edit out an swearing I do during the process. I'll have to wait until the weekend to ensure I have enough time to finish the job.

Fixed the spelling at well, good looking out. Pretty sure if I document this replacement no one would take it seriously seeing as how I didn't know how to spell the make of the vehicle.

Paul Wall, excellent picture. I was mostly hoping someone had done it before and could tell me if I can unhook the end of the cable where it meets the latch under the front of the hood and pull it out, and if the removal of panels were necessary, and if so which panels (in the engine bay, not the interior), when installing the new cable. When I work on something I tend to overdue it and remove much more than was necessary. Making the task take twice as long.

What pisses me off is I broke the plastic part off, I would rather leave the cable intact and replace the the plastic handle but it appears to be engineered to that if the handle breaks, thats it. Get a new cable.

Thanks again for the help!

Ive been running with a pair of vicegrips on the hood release cable for the past 10 years at least. Ive got a new cable, but I think it gives the car character. My car is known for the vicegrip hood release...

I dont think itd be incredibly hard, you will have to remove the drivers side wheel and all that plastic cladding so you can pull it through the grommet on the firewall.. id say its doable in an afternoon.

No the stock E brake on my car had to be removed to make room for the clutch pedal. The clutch pedal bracket sits right where the E brake pedal sat
