So my friend's dad's 93 Toyota Camry completely crapped out the other week (huuge rod knock, 270,xxx miles, no oil x 1 week, etc), and I've been comissioned to help pull the old engine and install a "new" one.

We were working on it today, got all the electrical connections done, vaccum hoses, motor mounts, transmission bolts, all that crap done-- but I have a few questions for anyone who's done this kinda thing before.

1. the "new" engine doesnt have it's own transmission, so our plan was to just pull the engine itself and leave the transmission in there for the next engine. Is this even possible? I remember when I pulled my KA transmission off, I had to pull the transmission back a few inches to get the input shaft's splines to pull apart. Is it the same deal on FWD automatic transmission, or am I missing something?

2. If we can leave the transmission and pull the engine, what do we do with the hubs/axels? Can we just leave them as is?

3. Anything else I should be aware of? We dont have a FSM...

So yes you can leave the transmission mounted, just detach it from the motor.
