Anyone ever get a timing chain noise that only happens at a certain RPM?

This is sort of a crosspost to here: zerothread?id=412904

Basically I figured I'd ask here too, more views etc. The gist of the other thread was this:

-got a buzzing/rattling noise coming from the front of the engine-only hear the noise between 2000 and 2500 rpm-removed the upper timing chain guides already-has anyone heard of this happening before? where it only makes noise in a certain RPM range?

Um, if your tensioners and guides are off, borken or missing... sooner or later the buzzing you hear (Chain-saw) will cut a hole throught the thermal barrier and your cooling system will fail and you engine is gonna go bye bye... This is a common problem with KA's so take the time to fix it now or replace whole motor later.

And, DO NOT buy cheap S**T knock off timing kits, you might as well not fix if you do. NISSAN OEM is a MUST

Huh, now THAT is interesting. Looks like that's all from the lower chain though.. I'm pretty sure it's the upper chain that's giving me problems. Or at least that's where the sound seems to be coming from. In any event, I'm sure it's not THAT bad yet.

Also, to the person asking if it could be a heat shield, I doubt it, because all my OEM heatshields are in a scrap yard somewhere.

I too am very interested. My car does the exact same thing, buzzing rattling sound from 2000 to 2500 rpm's, difference being that my engine is an S14 SR.

If it's a chain you'll hear it mainly at idle. Not at any particular interval.I have a buddy whos s14 has a similar noise at around that rpm and i think it is a slight exhaust leak due to not putting propper torque to the manifold and not following the torque order.Untill i rebuilt mine i never heard it driving just at idle.I bet once the upper guides were removed ,with the amount of slack i seen on mine, it is bouncing all over in between the upper sprockets. It seems there is just enough tension to keep from skipping teeth.

Hooooly crap you know what? Now that I think about it, the first time I noticed the noise was when I swapped my t25 our for my t28. Maybe I did mess up on torquing my manifold.. s***, that didnt even occur to me, since the last time I had any trouble with an exhaust leak, it was a blown gasket at the collector and it sounded much different. I also thought I just noticed it then because I was listening extra carefully since I had just been working on the thing. But if it's a leak at the manifold.. jeebus, that could just be it! I'm gonna go have a look..

Side note: I have metal gaskets.. they aren't layered, just like a single piece of reasonably soft metal of some sort. If I've torqued the mani badly, could that cause that type of gasket to blow like a paper gasket would? Or can I basically loosen all the bolts, retorque them and expect the gaskets to be fine?
