HOW THE HECK IS IT SO CHEAP? $1 for a breakfast plate?!?

http://www.ikea.com/ms/en_US/IKEA_Food/restaurant.html

Wish there was one here. Unfortunately all the nordic people of the midwest are way the hell up north in moose country.

I used to work next door to an IKEA for a couple years (about 10 yrs ago). Interesting place. The oddest thing about them was navigating thru the store itself. Separate entrance and exit, laid out like a complex maze. designed to force you to walk thru each department. Very popular for mall walkers, but annoying if you were after something specific near the exit. Unless you're familiar with the layout and learn the unmarked shortcuts, you have a loooooong walk to the exit. So a bistro located at the exit was a clever idea.

You should have said something when you were in Philly!
We could have taken you to the one near Penns Landing.

Never had the breakfast, but I had lunch there a few times.
It's...ok. I like lingonberry soda. :P
Like Joel said they have a 'bistro' by the exit too where they have
ice cream and hot dogs. Also next to it is a mini mart where you
can buy frozen Swedish meatballs.

Ikea is mentally assaulting sometimes, especially this time of year :ohno:

The breakfast is ON POINT. Comes out to about 4 bucks after you get an orange juice and a biscuit. But it is one hell of a breakfast, being Ikea food and all.

I went to the Ikea in Phoenix last time I was there. Didn't eat there. They built one in Salt Lake a couple years ago. Never had the desire to go to it. Lots of places use it as a promo location...always a radio show or a car dealer or someone using the store or the parking lot for some event. Seems weird to me. Like holding a live outdoor radio broadcast in front of a Walmart.

It's like the ultimate loss leader promotion. Not only do they get you to show up at the store, but with the rat maze, they make you look at all the products on the way to the cafe. I bet they make $5 on each breakfast plate they sell.

I always come in through the exit doors. Due to fire regulations the doors are marked for specific sections, so instead of walking the whole store, I just venture where I need to go. The restaurants up here are located in the middle of the store. The snack counter is at the exit.

There's one about 2hrs from me in Cincinnati, we've been 3 times to it and twice to the one in Atlanta. and never left empty handed. The food is pretty good though, especially for the price. Probably half or more of our house consist of IKEA furniture.

The food being cheap is a simple marketing ploy, a loss leader to get bodies into the store. In our area, the hotdogs and ice cream were occasionally free if you walked thru the store. And being in the Philly area, there was usually an employee or two at the exits during peak periods directing you to the entrance so you can't just sneak in the exit where the cheap food, cashiers, and clearance merchandise are located.

Yeah, gets people in the store.

I've been to Ikea like 20 times but never eaten there. I really want to, actually, everyone says it's quite good, and I have a soft spot for any sort of Scandinavian food, generally.

I can never find what I f*** want in that store. You just sort of wander about and buy whatever catches your eye.
I bought a 12 pack of their meatballs for two bucks...does that count? They were aight.

Pffff. I'd tell them I was just in there and I need to go to the bathroom. POTTY EMERGENCY.

I was originally going to respond to this thread and say the breakfast is made out of people. That's my .02.

I occasionally go there just for the meatballs and lingenberry. Nothing wrong with getting a cheap meal. I usually go up the backway and it takes me right there.
