This turns out to be a fairly widespread problem showing up on multiple makes following the iphone ios 4 release. The solution - at least for me - was found on an apple support forum
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jsp ... 5&tstart=0. For my 2010 EX35, with an Iphone 3GS running the first release of ios 4, the process I followed was this -
- start car
- plug in running iphone
- (system will crap out after 10-30 sec)
- do a hard restart of the iphone - press the "home" button (bottom front center) and the power/lock button on the top simultaneously for 10 sec or so until the apple screen reappears - don't swipe the power off slider that appears early in this process
- I unplugged the iphone and reconnected the cable - the ipod control menus appeared but no sound came from the music.
- I unplugged the iphone, turned the car off and on again (rebooting the car?), and reconnected the iphone
- Everything copacetic again with full ipod control and display of album art.
