Anyone else hear this noise out of their SR transmission?

I can hear this gear noise that only occurs when I'm holding a gear above 2500rpm's and letting the car decelerate on the gear. I was wondering if other SR guys are getting that. I have the S14 SR and my buddy's S13 SR does the same thing. We both have upgraded clutches but I don't know if this is because of that or is it a bad sign for the transmission to make that noise. The noise immediately goes away when you accelerate and yes it does it in every gear.

Any info is appreciated....

mine does it too, im assuming its no big deal since i drained the gear oil and there were no chunks of metal stuck in there.

hmm I have the same problem it drives me nuts...any updates on possible problems?

q'sstock shifter (mine is non-stock)?do you have the rubber block that hangs off the back of the transmission (mine is missing)?

do you guys have spec clutches? I have the same issue with my stage3. I think it may be flywheel chatter.

I have the same noise too, only in 4th gear decelerating around 2500 to 2000 RPM. I have Spec 2. First I thought it's my engine mounts, replaced it with Nismo, no avail. I had both stock shifter and short shifter, didn't make any difference.

Hurddawg, what rubber block? The one that hangs the cat converter? Or the metal dust cover at the end of the transmission to the driveshaft? I got both.

240dreams, it could very well be Spec clutch chatter if all of us with the noise has that clutch. But the Spec clutch disc has spring in it to dampen vibration. I really don't know. Anybody else?

the rubber block I'm talking about hangs directly off the tail end of the transmission just before the dust cover. I figure that there should be one as my auto transmission had one and there is a place to bolt one on this transmission. The block is fairly big, a couple pounds in weight and about 4" wide, 2"long and 2" in height.

Never thought of clutch chatter, that may be the cause. I also have a Spec 2 clutch (w/ toda flywheel).

I don't have a problem with stuttering however.

If you're using nismo mounts it will only get worse. Same goes for B&M short shifter.

That's probably due to a shot pilot bearing in your driveshaft. It's a common thing. Unfortunately, the bearing cannot be replaced as it is sealed behind a u-joint. Your only option is to replace the driveshaft w/ a new/used piece or get an aluminum Enjuku driveshaft (heard phase2 has one now too).

What stutter? I don't have that. The noise is only present in 4th gear decelerating. I hate that.

Hurddawg, are talking about the transmission mount?

Redline is too thin. Our transmission needs thicker oil for smoother operation.

nope, I looked at a couple pics of differing SR trannies and it appears that the manual transmission doesn't have it, although it does have a mounting point for it. So I don't think its our problem.

I really thinking its the Spec clutch since it seems that those of us with the problem seem to have the Spec. I can hear it in other gears just that its exaggerated in 4th gear. Drives me fukkking crazy too, so I stuffed towels between the center console and the tunnel to help quiet it down. It still there but not too annoying.

redline mtl is too thin. mt90 is just fine. i use mt90. if its only in 4th gear then its in the trans. 4th gear is the only gear that locks the mainshaft.

I didn't notice any noise until I put in the lightweight flywheel, clutch and filled the transmission with Redline. But now it definitely makes noise.

Yep transmission is probably getting ready to go if you beat on it hard, I broke 3 in 6 months, two made that noise the last one I guess just too hard of shiften broke 2nd gear like it as nothing.

light weight flywheels can cause noises. thats one of the reasons that manufacturers use heavy flywheels(not the main reason though). look at the bmw m5, it has like a 35 lbs dual mass flywheel. the 350z is up there somewhere too. i know for a fact if you put a lightweight flywheel in a m5 it makes a lot of noise.

as for gear oil in m/t. be sure to use a gl-4 gear oil. regular gl-5 is great for rear ends but it is bad for synchros. check your owners manual if you dont believe me. they specify gl-4 because it does not have the extreme pressure additives(sulfur) that eat synchros. there is a reason people put mobil one gear oil in corvettes and the transmission goes south shortly after. i would definitely use it in my diff though.

the z33 has the noise problem too when you use a lighten flywheel. If thats the case here, my guess is that there isn't enough load on the shafts during decel.

yeah, and they rattle. in the case of the z33 i find it to be a pleasant noise. like a racecar.

I have 2 similar noises. One is the one described, so I use 3 qts of Redline MT-90 and some Redline MTL, and it quieted the noise up considerably.

The 2nd noise is the rubber block adapted attached to the transmission to the Downpipe. the bolt every now and then comes loose and gives me a louder grinding noise.
